Dismiss popups

Is there a way to dismiss popups (like a new text message) but not dismiss the notification? I am running Lollipop.

The popup (it's called a toast) should disappear within seconds. If you get a popup with a button to press to dismiss it, and that clears the notification too, it's just bad app design. That's how the app works and you probably can't change it unless there's something in the app's settings that allows you to change that behavior (like a checkbox labled "Dismissing popup clears notice").

Thanks, I was hoping it was something simple I was missing. I think it would be convenient to swipe left or right to dismiss the toast and clear the icon from the notification bar. Or, swipping up would dismiss the toast but leave the icon in the notification bar. Maybe in a future version of Android this will be possible.
