Display always the highest source of battery drain?

I was under the assumption that SAMOLED is supposed to REDUCE battery drain. From my experience (and apparently a lot of peoples'), the screen is actually the biggest drain. I like keep my screen on auto brightness, but it looks like this is not an option for me. Either I have a bad battery (which I plan on getting tested today at the Sprint store), or auto brightness can't be used. Is auto brightness really harming the battery, or is it just the power of SAMOLED?

The screen is going to be the main strain of a battery regardless of how efficient it is. Auto brightness is usually a good setting to keep your screen on so it adjusts when you don't need the screen so bright.

I guess i have a bad battery because this drains at like 1 percent a minute when the screen is on, and gets worse when I use 3G. I plan on getting it tested today. I've disabled DRM (which has done nothing) and am runnin DI18

Display will always be the highest source of battery drain no matter what. Auto brightness would be a good setting.

Display has always accounted for 90+% of my battery... I use a widget to adjust brightness right from my homescreen... I usually keep it at 1-10% whilst home or office and set to auto when I'm out and about...

Like others have said, the display is ALWAYS going to be the biggest source. SAMOLED is better at battery drain, but the screen is always going to be the biggest source, because it's the most power hungry in comparison to everything else the phone is doing.

so would everyone here say that around 3 hours of keeping the display on, browsing the web, market, and usage of apps, a normal battery? I swear I use to be able to get more. This is mostly with ONLY 3G. I'll put in the *#4636*1111# and my battery will be down 1 percent like every 1 min, whether I am using 3G or not.

Depends on how bright the screen is.... That is why I keep it at the levels I stated.. Average use I get from 9-12 hours... I have found the auto-brighness setting to not always be the best setting..

One of SAMOLED's battery saving features is that it takes zero battery to display the color black. So break out those dark wallpapers ;)

The Android system consumes the most battery. The display does indeed run in second place. Leaving the display setting to automatic would be the best setting for the phones. Lowering the display brightness doesn't show any significant increase in battery life, and only result in not being able to see the display in the way it was intended to. I've been using my phone since this morning, and also on other social network - and I haven't had a low battery warning yet. In fact I'm at 56% and I've been using my phone without charging. I'm stock and no modification at all. All settings are set to factory default.

Ps. Automatic make the screen goes from high to low - depending on your surroundings.

This would be a first then, because every account I've ever seen and heard, including a few different devices of my own on Android always, ALWAYS have the display running first, and I'm anal about shutting the screen off when I'm not using it.

The Android system itself is incredibly efficient at battery consumption -- it's the main reason most Android phones can sit idle for as long as they do (some have been rated to have a standby life of 15 days).

Chris is right. Try going to Settings>About phone>Battery use and take a look at the percent used for Display vs everything else.

you're saying you can browse the web and play with apps for 9-12 hours straight? I was talking about keep the screen on for entire 3 hours using 3G

Dispaly is always ranked first. Even if I leave auto brightness unchecked, it makes no difference in my battery life. The most drain occurs when I am using 3G. However, I get wonderful battery life when the phones is sleep. I even get better battery life when I play 3d games like NFS Shift or NOVA than web browsing. Is that normal?

The Screen makes all the difference, 3G and web browsing of course drain more than usual because you are coupling it with the drain of the screen. Its like throwing a backpack on someone that is 400lbs running a marathon.

the reason you drain more battery during browsing because you are using the screen+data+graphics,,, when playing a game you are just being drained by screen+graphics... thats simplified of course.

+1 on the dark wallpapers.
Leo Laporte did a segment not too long ago on Smart phone battery consumption.

Most experts agree that darker wallpapers will use less battery.

I have noticed better battery since changing my wallpapers

Part of that is because while SAMOLED does save battery life while displaying dark colors, it actually uses more battery life when displaying pure white, up to 3x the consumption of traditional LCDs. Most web pages are white, and thus take much more battery power to display.

Hmmmmm.... I not sure about that one but I could be wrong. Whether the screen is white or black its still using the same brightness for the screens display.
