Display not working after replacement

I dropped my phone and cracked the screen so I bought a new screen. I disassembled the phone and removed the old display. I then connected the new display like this to test it and it worked.

I unplugged the screen and installed it the way it's supposed to be (with the screen on the front), turned on the phone, and the screen wouldn't turn on! The phone works, I can make it ring, and I hear all the usual notification sounds.

Then I put the display back the way it was when it worked (like in the picture above) and it still wouldn't turn on.

I thought something must be wrong with the screen so I bought a new one, but the same problem is happening so it's not a problem with the display. What could be wrong?

Thanks

Are you certain that you're plugging the connector in with the same orientation both times (when it works and when it doesn't work)? I've reversed it a few times when the connector was on the side of the board opposite where the screen foes (with a slot to feed the cable through). It doesn't work reversed, of course.

Yes, I'm connecting it the right way. And it's not working when it's connected on the front side of the board or on the back side. It only worked once.
