Display Picture Full Screen

Hello Everyone: I am trying to display a picture/photograph in full screen mode (or at least as near as possible) using either the Google Photos or Gallery app. I have attached screen shots of what the camera shows when it takes the picture and the resulting display in the Photos app. What I want is the photo display to fill as much of the screen as the camera's image, and with the same aspect ratio - is this possible? Is there a setting or trick to making the picture display full screen?

I use the stock Gallery app to view my photos and they all show in full screen.

The gallery app is showing the full picture. The ratio of the photo is different than the ratio of the screen after the picture is taken (4x3 vs. 16x9).

Hi Gwaron: Thanks for your comments. The effect I am trying to achieve is the same as I can get on a Samsung Galaxy S4, where the camera preview is full screen and the display of the photo is also full screen and the aspect ratio is unchanged (see Samsung Galaxy S4 screenshots). Is this possible on the Nexus 5?

What you see on the screen vs the final picture is camera app dependent, I believe. With the stock app, when you take a picture, the width you see on the screen is what ends up on the photo, however the final picture adds more height-wise you can't see on the screen.

With VSCO Cam, what you see on the screen is the actual picture you will end up with.

Gwaron:Thanks for your reply. After some more searching, I am finding a few more people commenting on the inconsistency of a 16:9 preview and a 4:3 picture. But it looks like that's the way it is designed - if as you say, it is camera app dependent, maybe there is hope that there will be some additional flexibility/features with future updates. In the meantime I'll check out VSCO.

Glad to help. What I meant by camera app dependent is how it shows on the screen while taking the picture. I don't think there's any way getting around the 4:3 ratio output of the photo. Keep us updated with what you find out!

Yes this! I was thinking I accidently set it to 4:3 or something. Every other phone has always taken and shown wide screen, this seems wrong on the nexus 5....

Actually, IMO Nexus got it right. For photography 4:3 is a standard ratio for photos and image sensors, where 16:9 is more of a standard for HD video.

In that case the preview when in the camera should not be full screen

You can go into the camera options, and set the saved picture size to whatever you want, including the 16:9 ratio, which would equal what you see on the screen. Plenty of options.

Interesting. Are you using the N5 with KitKat ver. 4.4.1? For that configuration, I have the following additional options:

2 MPixels (16:9)
720 x 480

Gwaron: I do not yet have the KitKat 4.4.1 update - I am still running 4.4. I don't know what the update schedule is, but I'll look out for it and check the camera options after it is installed.

Yes but who wants to be limited to 2M pixels in order to do 16x9 ratio? :-/ why would Google only allow that setting on the lower picture quality size setting.

Thor20003: Yes, I agree - I was happy to see the 16:9 option, but the results at 2M are disappointing. I don't know if it's a hardware limitation, but if not, perhaps there's hope for 16:9 at a higher resolution in future updates.

I know it's a bit late, but Quickpic does display images in full screen as well and is a good replacement to the stock gallery app.
