Distance logged on the Excercise Walking is too low

When compared to a Garmin Forerunner or a FitBit Ionic my Gearfit 2 Pro under measures the distance walked or run by 1.2 to 1.5km in 3.8km which seems a VERY big error. I recall reading someplace, but cant find it now, that the Gearfit 2 Pro needs some time away from its paired phone to cause it to start logging location and distance correctly. Is that the case? If so how long do I need to wait once outside range of the phone bluetooth connection? If thats not correct what is causing the distance error and is there a way to fix it?
