Distorted sound

I like to go to sleep listening to music. I would set my Nexus 10 on repeat and go to sleep without any issues. However, with the Nexus 9, I start my playlist and then I'll wake up about an hour later and the sound is garbled and distorted. Kinda sounds like it's playing the music really really slow. I can restart the playlist and it'll play for about another hour or so and then crap out again.

I've experienced this while the tablet is not being charged, while it is being charged, while it is playing a remote playlist (via WiFi), while it is playing a downloaded playlist. I've also reset the tablet twice which also hasn't fixed the problem. I tried downloading an alternative music player (I'm using Google Music) but none of them can 'see' my Google Music tracks. Anyone have any suggestions?

What happens if you stream music from somewhere else for an hour, like Slacker or Pandora? Does it garble as well?

Good suggestion. I hadn't even actually thought about that. I'll try that tonight.

So Pandora did not have the same problem. Went back to Google Music and had the same problem. Only this time I did notice that all sounds were distorted so even the click when I select something was out of kilter

Google Play Music makes clicking sounds when you select something? I don't experience that.

Try Safe Mode, in case some 3rd party app is causing interference. This can still be useful after a hard reset, since apps may have automatically installed after you finished the Setup Wizard. https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2852139?hl=en

I have had this problem for a while, the problem gets much worse when the browser (in my case, Firefox) is rendering page with very complex layout and multitudes of javascripts, audio playing gets garbled immediately and the UI becomes sluggish. It's the weak nVidia Tegra chipset that is somehow causing the problem IMHO, I should have learned the lesson with Nexus 7 (2012) that was also Tegra. On upgrade to Lollipop Nexus 7 (2012) became unusable for many people. However Nexus 7 (2013) upgraded just fine and it was using Snapdragon. I would never buy another phone or tablet with nVidia chipset.
