If you stuck a pin in it you likely damaged the mic. The placement, as others have said, makes perfect sense for the purpose of the mic. If you're case didn't leave a gap for this mic then you should return it.

Probably....the case covering the hole likely explains why it was always hard for others to hear the wife talking. It's her phone.
Now, how much is it to replace the damaged mic? lol.

Actually I believe that is the dedicated NSA eavesdropping mic. You know, so they can listen to your surroundings even when you're using the main mic.
