I never had to worry about data plan minutes (was grandfathered in the Verizon unlimited data plan until recently) but with the new SMS app on the S6 if I use a voice recording to send an SMS message does it counts towards my data plan usage or is it still considered a plain old text message? Is there a calculation to determine how much data is used per second of audio?

Never thought about this as well, but what about MMS messages with pics or video?

As far as I know, MMS doesn't count towards your data usage. Sending a voice recording would count as MMS so you should be all good.

No it doesn't on android. On iPhone though, imessage does as it uses a different protocol as it's neither mms nor sms.
