Do I have to have a gmail/google account to access my calendar on motorola droid?

I am "upgrading" to a Motorola droid. On my old "nonsmart" phone I had a calendar in which I could add dates/times/reminders... When I access the calendar on the Droid it gives me two options, corporate or google. I just want to be able to have reminders of upcoming events without having another account to access. Any suggests are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! Phones often have an option to add events to the "Phone account" or "Device account," which is locally stored only, and not synced anywhere. Is that available?
