But what if it gets damaged from a drop or something? I would guess renter's insurance wouldn't cover that.

You're right, renter's insurance wouldn't cover that. Primarily, I self-insure cell phones. The renter's insurance is there as a back-up. Something like a drop doesn't concern me as much because I am a multi-device person. I buy new phones often and would just wait until something else came out that I liked to replace a dropped phone.
