Do you have data plan for your Xoom?

Do you have Verizon data plan?

I have the data plan because Costco said I had to. Need it to get the activation rebate. Glad I did, I can't connect to a wifi service yet. I got $20/month no contract. I was planning on canceling and but I may up it to 3gb/mo.

I think there's a lot of "CSR Roulette" out there... when I was my Xoom purchase the Costco wireless agent said I did not need a data plan, but if I got one, they would charge the fee, and then they would rebate the fee. He also said I could drop the plan at any time and re-add at any time, but each plan activation (when you didn't have a data plan) would re-incur the fee. So ... I guess we need to see the official policy on the Verizon website to know what's accurate.

I'm going to withhold my vote, because as of today I don't have a data plan but I am considering adding it. I have the Droid 1 with an unlimited data plan, but apparently you can't tether the Xoom to it so I may get the $20/month plan just to have some mobility when outside WiFi hotspots.

Costco charges the $35 activation fee, but then rebates it, so I would only be paying the monthly fee and for $20, I might just do it. Since I purchased the Xoom at Best Buy, the challenge is to see if Costco will let me activate it!

Drew - I see that you already activated data, but you can tether an OG Droid, if your Droid is rooted. I tried the Wireless Tether app and the Bluetooth tethering instructions on these forums, but neither worked. Droid-Life posted instructions specific to the OG Droid. You use Wireless Tether for Root in Bluetooth mode, rather than Wifi mode. Here is the link should you want to eliminate your data plan.

Thanks! I had looked into rooting my Droid in the past, but never found instructons for my build so I've been on the stock build forever. I have 2.2.1 with build FRG83D, but the root instructions via the links above are for 2.2 build FRG22D - is it still going to work?

Costco and Best Buy aren't the ones charging the fee, Verizon is. Thats why Costco has to give you a rebate on the fee rather than just not charging you. I bought mine at Costco and the guy told me I had 72 hours to cancel and I woulnd't be charged the fee or the first month, I'd just get a pro-rated charge for the usage.

Also - Verizon will charge the $35 fee every time you activate which is really lame for a tablet. Especially considering the ipad pricing model that lets you turn it off an on anytime without any activation fees. I really hope verizon reconsiders their Android tablet pricing model.

As of right now, WiFi only. I get better speeds tethering off my Nexus One on AT&T's 3G. But after my Xoom has been updated to LTE, then I may get the data plan just to play around with the speeds.

I know this is a rant but WOW Verizon can you make yourself any harder to do business with? Let me explain what I mean. I am currently a long time ATT wireless customer so I do not have an account with Verizon. Late last week I won a XOOM and was exploring activating the Verizon data service.

However I wanted a service plan like ATT offers on the iPad, which is to allow me to open an account and pay with my credit card so no credit check is needed. The reason for this is we are building a new house and were told NOT to open any new credit accounts.

From the reports I've read online Verizon plans to offer the same pre-pay service plans when the iPad comes to Verizon later this week.

So why do they not allow the same service plans for the Xoom. What difference does it make what device I'm using?

Hopefully they will be changing the plan options when the iPad launches and the Xoom will also get the same service plans/flexibility on account setup. Otherwise I'll have to wait 4 more months before I can get it.

OK I'm off my soapbox now

This is just a complete guess but I thought buying the Xoom off contract allowed for pre-pay month-to-month service that can be turned off and on anytime you want just like the iPad's plans? If that is not the case and even for their no-contract "month-to-month" plans they make you go through the credit check and other nonsense, then they have no chance of getting a data plan out of me.

I walked into Verizon and said I will buy the xoom. I told the Guy that I wanted the wifi only model (but willing to spend the extra money for the capability of 3g/4g) and I'm not interested in purchasing Verizon's data service. He sold me my zoom @ retail price w/out a monthly data plan. Anyone telling you that the purchase of the first month is mandatory is flat out wrong and probably trying to boost their commission.

That's not the question in this particular case. I know that the one month mandatory data requirement is false. I bought my Xoom at the no contract price and am using it on WiFi without ever having activated Verizon data. The issue in question is that if I decide in six months that I want to activate Verizon data service on it on a pay-as-you-go basis for a month or two, does Verizon make you go through the steps that they would for a post-paid customer including the credit check? This should not be the case at all. But the poster before me is making it sound like this is what he was led to believe.

EDIT: And having worked in the cellular sales for many years in the past, I'm very familiar with how commission-hungry the employees are. But to confirm again, that is not the issue in question at this moment for me.

I do, cause it was forced by Costco, and when I tried to cancel it by calling Verizon, three times I was denied. Lame!

How much did you pay for the Xoom? Did you buy it on contract for $599 or off contract for $799? If the former, then yes, the data is required. That's what the contract is for. If the latter, then you're being shafted and you should threaten to return the device and cancel if they do not honor their own terms.

To get around paying the activation fee as you turn the data plan on and off just suspend it instead of cancelling it. You can suspend it for up to 6 months at a time. That's what I plan on doing. If I am not going to use the data for a while I will just suspend it.

I really only have it right now to see how much data I use. If I use under 1GB I will probably keep it for the $20/mo. I don't use it much outside of my home or office, but the few times I have it has been nice.

I am excited for 4G LTE.

I got shafted. I paid $799. I'm probably going to end up returning it. To make myself feel better I guess I look at it as a rental fee for using the device ($55 if they don't honor the activation fee rebate won't kill me). I really love it, but $799 is a lot. When the WIFI comes out I might get it, or I may look at other Honeycomb options (LG, Samsung).

I bought mine for $587 from Costco with a two year data plan. I definitely wanted a data plan going into the store because I planned to use it on my commutes and my carriers data coverage over the route was very very spotty. It's all worked out well. For folks who plan on keeping the thing at home 24/7, the data plan doesn't make much sense.

If an activation fee has to be paid every time, that is terrible!

I bought my Xoom yesterday at Best Buy for $799 with 3g, but did not activate it at the time of purchase. After owning an iPad for a year, I had planned to do the same thing that I did with it, which was to activate during months that I was on family vacations or trips, then turn it off when I was at home. I do tether to my rooted DroidX using Wifi Tether, which works great, but I really wanted the ability to turn the service on and off as needed. If an activation fee has to be paid every time, that is terrible! They will not get any money for data from me! Verizon is going to have to get their heads out of their butts, or it will cost them a lot of customers.

I have a 3G plan - WIFI only applies when I am at home. Everyone locks their networks nowadays. Well it seems like they do.

Considering I always have my phone on me, pushing one button to make it a hotspot vs paying for two data plans makes no sense. Now if VZW will just get LTE to town so my TBolt can hook up to the 4G goodness!
