i know it sounds like a stupid question, but hear me out. most of you know about the concectivity issues with the all in one stock restore. so i have been flashing back to stock and then doing a restore, back to stock, restore. well, notice how i didnt mention rooting again. so, lets say i just got this new phone, and i want to root and then install a custom rom. i havent entered any data and i havent installed apps. basicly i dont care about loosing data. could i flash cwm through odin, boot into recovery, flash dj05 modem and say superdark rom. when i reboot my phone it should be rooted. i did not root and i flashed a restore and im back to my rooted phone. had to reflash the modem but thats unrelated to the root. what do you think?

Many ROMS have root and busybox included in them. Thus, flashing one without actually going through a root process, would still yield root access after the install.

thats what i thought. its deff something to remember if you ever have to do a warrenty replacement. could also save some a lot of time.

The only problem with this that I know of is CWM needs root to work. It requires SU privlages before rebooting...

It depends on the phone. I know for certain that you couldn't just flash a ROM without what we call S-off because the system would overwrite any writing you did to the system and re-flash the stock ROM on the G2/Desire Z. HTC and T-Mobile both lied about it being a "feature" but in reality in was more of a bug. Some phones have ways to undoing root if you happen to need to go back to completely stock experience.

Boot into recovery, update.zip and then apply the Flash? Interesting Idea and did not think about it before. Cool....wish I knew that 20 flashes ago....

lol. me too. just figured it out when i went back to stock. i had to reflash cwm with odin, then all i had to do is a restore. i cant speak for other phones as this is my first android.
