Yeah, that is pretty goofy, wonder how that got programmed. Luckily, for speech to text I access it through the virtual keyboard. And really, thinking about it I only ever use the speech to text function when I don't have two hands free to type. Like, I've used it primarily if I'm outside smoking a cigar and checking email and want to do a quick reply. As a result I've only ever tried to access it through the virtual KB, since I can do it all one handed, until I just tested right now after reading your post.

I've honestly not used the slide-out keyboard for anything except the initial sign-in that makes you use it. Once I found SwiftKey it completely eliminated any need to use it.

And I'm on the other end. I use the physical keyboard almost exclusively. But that the greatness of this device. You have choices.

update i'm using the gingerbread keyboard by the way.

As Dwayne figured out, try the multitouch keyboard. The keyboard mic works for me with that, but not the gb keyboard.

My daughter and I both have the D2. I use my slide out keyboard all the time, and she never uses hers. RE: the mic button, I also use it only on the virtual keyboard because I only go to the mic when I'm without both my hands and need to answer/send a text quickly. My keyboard got easier to use after a week or so because the keys seemed to "break in" a little bit. I came from a Storm 2, so I like the feel of a "keyboard." I have the haptic feed back disabled on the phone; it drove me nuts. I can type very quickly and accurately on the slide out keyboard. I am intrigued by that Swype business, though.

My keyboard is starting to break in a little too. I use swype instead of the multitouch keyboard but I only use it when I'm doing one handed texting.

This sounds stupid but I've gone an entire year without realizing that the keyboard has a back button on the bottom row.

My reason for such a complaint is that i only use the mic button when my Droid 2 is sitting in the car dock and i want to fill out a text field. I know that if i just wanted to send a text message i could just hold the search haptic, but what if i want to use google voice or gtalk? or anything else for that matter. oh well guess i'll just settle for the multi-touch keyboard. i like it a lot anyway. its just not gingerbread.

EDIT I don't want to use the virtual keyboard when driving because its far to difficult for me as my truck is quite rigid and bumpy. always hitting that dang smiley face button when trying to correct an already faulty text. SO ANNOYING! who needs a smiley face button anyway!

Coming from a phone w/o a physical keyboard, I love it. That said, the slider on my R2D2 flexes a little on the left when closed. That I don't like so much but its not the end of the world.

I don't like when the slider gets loose. That makes me crazy.

I hardly ever use it. I use the virtual keyboard all the time because I can do it with one hand and it is faster. I only use the physical keyboard for copying and pasting and editing text. My next device probably be a full touch to eliminate some of the bulk. Don't get me wrong the D2 is a great phone but I don't see the need of the physical keyboard for me.

after several months of ABUSE my r2 doesn't "flex" - hopefully that is something I never have to look forward to. Well, I'm still learning to swype ... it works and totally mazes me from a programmer point of view.

Simply hold shift and use the arrow keys to select the text. You may want to use the arrow keys to place the cursor at the start or end of what you want to select then do the shift arrow key select. I used it just now to remove the last line of your post in my quote. Are you using the default keyboard or a 3rd party keyboard? I'm using a 3rd party keyboard app and it works for me.

Just tried again and it worked this time. Last time, was using Firekeys. Maybe that was why it didn't work.

For those who hardly use the physical keyboard, I wonder why did you get the Droid 2 in the first place? Wouldn't it have been better to get the Droid X if you weren't going to use the physical keyboard?

For me personally, as my first device coming off of a long line of blackberry's I couldn't go cold turkey, no keyboard, right off the bat. I did however fall in love with the touchscreen on my D2. So sometimes I use it (mostly for typing out longer emails), but most of the time I use the screen. I also really wanted my buddy r2d2...

That means LG ally, OG Droid (already owned), Droid 2 (verizon upgraded me for free), Droid 2 Global, or the fabled MERGE (isnt going to verizon i dont think). Plus accesories are more likely to have multiple device compatibility as the Droid is an iterative device.

i think its great i have a milestone 2, the same version as droid 2 i think but for different market, and i think the keyboard is great, as a previuos user of blackberry, but i guess as far as i know the upcoming version with an extra line of keys just for numbers will be amazing!

How did you get the D2 for free? And how did you get the d2g? upgrade? retail? craigslist?

I never had a D2G, but they are identical except for the CPU clockspeed, cellar radio, and spot for a SIM card.

Verizon replaced my Droid OG with a D2 after sending me 3 unacceptable Droid OG CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) replacements in 2 weeks.

I got a call from verizon yesterday telling me that i have an upgrade for a new device.

I got scammed on a Droid Incredible though, check your ESN with verison and the inside of the device when buying off craigslist.
