Do you like the slide out keyboard?

I don't like when the slider gets loose. That makes me crazy.

Ok so I just got a d2g as a replacement for 7 bad dinc replacements in a row. The screen will open more on one side than the other when I use one hand and don't push up in the middle...is this a concern or should I just accept it for what it is...I really am sick of getting new phones

I wish I could tell you because mine is the same way. Im gonna do a teardown of my droid 2 and see if I can fix it. But id give verizon a call and just get a new device.

Good call, i'd just do a swap as well. But my Droid 2 isnt under warranty as it is only carried over the warranty of my Droid OG or 3 month replacement warranty. Both have since expired, so time to rip it apart with my handy dandy T3 Torx screwdriver and a spudger.

I like my D2G keyboard, but I don't love it like my old BlackBerry Curve 8530 keyboard. I'd prefer the Droid Pro keyboard, but I returned 2 of them for glitchy behavior before switching to D2G. Check the forums and even the VZW reviews, the D Pro has weird rebooting issues among other things.

I like the keyboard, but I prefer to use the virtual keyboard. I type much faster with it.

You'll find a reboot every now and then with the D2 as well. Not saying it's the same as the D2P, just that is does happen too with the D2. It happens very very rarely on mine, but one day I had it happen like 3 times. Been fine since then so far - many weeks later. I kinda caught myself cause when it happened I said, "Is this friggin thing glitchy or something?". Then I stopped and remember just how many *more* times I had my Blackberry Curve crash with the white screen and "Reset" option. And the blackberry takes long to start back up. I also recalled how I had a number of times where my iPhone would just go black and require a full power up - my wifes iPhone does this too and waaay more than it happened on mine.

So, meh... all these darn devices aren't perfect. Again, I've heard of the D2P issues you mentioned so I'm not saying what was happening there is normal.

I am digging the OK key. I use it to push login buttons and checkboxes.

Alt+dpad(left/right) jumps to the line ends. Alt+dpad(up/down) jumps to the top or bottom of the whole text box.

Ooh check this out. In the browser if you hold down shift and use the arrow keys you get a freaky little mouse cursor. You can release shift and move the cursor to some text. Then use the OK button to copy it to the clipboard.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm a new D2G owner and I feel like I've got to say something about the keyboard: I LOVE IT!!!

Honestly, I don't think VZW did a very good job promoting this phone. I went from a BB to the DX and missed a physical keyboard terribly, but all I'd ever heard about the Droid line was how crappy their keyboards were.

When I checked for myself, I admit I agreed. The keyboard on the original Droid and even the D2 felt like a big mat of plastic, with no key divisions or responsiveness.

I only started thinking of the D2G recently again, when I finally decided to give up waiting for the mythical HTC Merge. When I went to my VZW store to check it out, I was shocked to find the D2G has a completely different keyboard from the D2! The keys are totally detached from each other (like little individual square keys) and are totally clicky and responsive.

I don't think enough people know about this. Everyone in the Merge forums I frequented assumed all the Droids had that mat-style keyboard. Even my local VZW store had put the D2 out on display as the D2G, claiming they were identical. I got lucky that I happened to pick up the one actual D2G that they had out and noticed the difference. The guys that worked there were surprised--even they hadn't known that the D2G keyboard was different.

VZW should be talking up this keyboard WAY more, at least to their own employees!!

That's interesting about the key differences. Thank you for sharing. I have read every single review out there comparing the D2 and D2G and I have never seen that mentioned.

I think it just matters what plant your D2G comes from. I had 2 different OG Droids and they had different keyboards. gen 1 sucked and was flat. gen 2 was much more like the D2 keyboard (BUBBLED).

My D2 has separated keys like you talk about on your D2G. I love my D2 keyboard except that my screen hinge is loose so that my screen has some space between the keyboard when closed.

Wow, that's crazy. My D2 keyboard is all one surface, but with grooves around each key.

Wow! It's crazy to me that one phone would be manufactured with two different keyboards and still be sold as the same model!

For those of us who want physical keyboards, key design and style are really important. There was a very noticeable difference between the keypad of my D2G and the D2s that I looked at and tried out at the VZW store. It seems like it could be a significant issue if some D2s have one keyboard and some have others.

Also:

I love my D2 keyboard except that my screen hinge is loose so that my screen has some space between the keyboard when closed.

My handset is still new, so no looseness... yet. But I did notice that the hard case I clipped on it seemed to be stretching that hinge. When I had it on, the phone didn't have that satisfying "click" when opening and closing. I ended up taking off the front panel of the case and leaving just the back on. The hinge seems to have less stress on it that way, and the click is back when sliding it open and closed.

I got used to mine. Even with the somewhat monolithic keyboard, the keys are domed and make a nice little click. I just manhandle it and mash away and it goes pretty well now.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get the physical keyboard to respond to a long-press with the alternate symbol on the key? I use Smart Keyboard Pro, which makes that happen with the onscreen keyboards, but it doesn't seem to translate it to the physical keyboard.

Also, SKP can't seem to reconcile with the built-in keyboard's settings as far as getting auto-cap for the first word I type to work consistently. Anyone else had this issue?
