Do you really experience signal issue with your GN?

Do you own a GN, and experience the signal issue?

Have you tried doing a reset? Maybe you have an app that is creating the problem you are experiencing.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

I haven't explicitly done a factory reset, but I did unlock the bootloader, and the problem happened before and after the device wipe. I also relocked the bootloader (in anticipation of exchanging the device) with the same issue.

It's hard to test though, because it doesn't seem to consistently occur :(. It could be purely software, as you suggest, since I think it only occurs when the phone switches towers (at least, it doesn't happen when I'm just hanging out around the house), so perhaps it's related to the handoff issues mentioned in this thread.

As an aside, the phone doesn't receive any calls in this state either, so it's like the radios are not responding at all.

Purchased my GNex on launch day for use as my primary/work phone. I live and work inside I-287 in Central Jersey. LTE saturation around here is pretty high overall, but it does go in and out in places, even on my short nine-mile commute to work. I have owned a Thunderbolt and Bionic (not to mention a few other Verizon smartphones -OG Droid, iPhones 4 and 4S) during 2011.

The GNex is without a doubt the best real world performer yet and it's not even close. The TBolt was an absolute nightmare with 3G-4G handoffs. The Bionic, while capable of putting up better numbers in the Speedtest.net app, was a buggy disaster to use in real life. The GNex just works. Sure, other phones might pull faster speeds, but this thing is so much more consistant than anything else I've ever had on Verizon --LTE or otherwise. Fewest dropped calls and most consistent data connection yet.

Maybe this speaks more about improvements to Verizon's LTE network than it does the Galaxy Nexus, but I tend to think otherwise considering my experience in mid-September with the Bionic was so similarly lousy to my earlier experience with the Thunderbolt.

Just my two cents.

Ordered my GN online the night it came out. Had been having signal issues frequently. Fiances Droid Inc2 has been having better signal. Went into a nearby corporate store, one of the reps said it might be a SIM card issue so he replaced my SIM card and said to see how that goes. If not then, he told me to do a factory reset. Both the SIM card and the factory reset did not even come close in alleviating the issue. Going back tomorrow to exchange for another GN. Wish me luck!

This was my story exactly. The exchanged phone has been working perfectly since the day I got it.

I signed up just to post this. I'm in Richmond, VA and I got the Verizon Galaxy Nexus a little over a week ago, and ever since have had the signal resetting / dropping on me. So far I'm testing it in 3G to see if it happens there too, but it will completely drop signal from 2 / 3 bars, to nothing. I was told by a Verizon rep these are just the growing pains of a new 4G network, but being an IT there were a few small things I picked up that didn't seem like it was the network. So I started paying more attention to its' reset habits. This is just for your guys' reference, hopefully whoevers responsible will speak up and do something about it. Here are the facts:

-When disconnecting I am unable to make calls (disconnects from the network completely)
-Reseating the battery "sometimes" gets it back(this is for when it doesn't reconnect)
-Happens every 1-15 minutes
-Drops when not in use as well(I'll go to use the phone and it's not connected to the mobile network)
-Friend with Verizon 4G LTE service (but a different phone) does not experience these issues
-My phone is not rooted
-I've owned the phone for almost 2 weeks
-I have 2 apps installed, "textfree" and "splashtop"

EDIT:
-This will drop my calls when it drops the network, even if I just had 4 bars and am not moving.
-Switched to 3G only, so far almost an entire day without a single disconnect.

Your point #5 tells you all you need to know. Your buddy has a different LTE phone and has no issues. This is a scenario repeated numerous times by many people. The Nexus' radio is simply not as good as other radios in some other LTE phones.

Your only alternative is to cross your fingers and hope it's not a hardware issue and can be resolved with a software update or get a phone with a known better radio like the Rezound.

I honestly think that there are some faulty hardware Gnexus' floating around. My first one would drop in and out of service all day long. Even after factory resetting the device it still happened. That sounds like hardware problems to me. My second Gnexus works perfectly fine. Hopefully people with these issues still have time to get a replacement phone.

Alright, so just got my second GN. Seems to be working better than my first one!

Just to update, I went to a VZW corp store and explained my problem... and the guy at the store said it's related to the handoff issue that is supposed to be fixed in the next update (he described it as the phone losing connection and requiring a soft reset to fix). In any case, he didn't think exchanging the phone would have made a difference.

On the plus side, my phone was reporting better signal strength than the display Nexus.

Updated my original post - When staying in 3G only I don't have the issues. At least when I was using it. Also, it will drop in the middle of calls, from 4 bars to "no mobile service".

I spoke to the Verizon rep who I've been following up with about it, since I've been hounding him for an extended battery that becomes available, he says you have 2 weeks to exchange the phone from purchase date to get a NEW phone, as opposed to a refurbished one if you were to exchange after that first 2 weeks. He continues to believe it's just how the Galaxy Nexus is handling the 4G LTE hiccups. My friends phone just happens to be handling it better. I said I'd give it until the end of my 2 weeks, if the problem persists, then I'm exchanging it.

I honestly don't even think it's the "hand-offs". Because if I have a full 4G LTE signal, where I'm at 4 bars, I'm not moving but sitting in my room, it will still drop signal and disconnect me from the network. I'm just sitting on my bed and all of a sudden the web site I'm trying to pull up says "cannot be displayed" and then the bars disappear and it's a grey triangle. Then I have to wait for about a minute to reconnect. This will happen every minute, 2 minutes, but never longer than 15 minutes. Slightly annoying, and many times if it has disconnected while I'm not using the phone, it won't attempt to reconnect until I unlock the phone. Which means after unlocking I have to wait about a minute to use it.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

The problem I've had is re-acquiring a signal once lost. In the same location if I leave the phone on I keep 3G the whole time, but if data is turned off and back on it won't find 3G. Also- and maybe this is an issue with radio towers, but my 4G coverage in NW Fort Worth can be pretty variable from one area to another nearby.

When I first got the phone I was having some data issues (dropping 4G to 3G, sometimes altogether outside of the unplanned outages). However, as of late, I've been noticing stronger network performance in terms of data. Not sure what happened but I'm pretty satisfied.

So, after 2 weeks of spotty service with the GN I decided to re-flash stock 4.0.2 before exchanging it for another unit. After 2 days of use, my initial impression is that it FIXED my reception issues. The phone now appears to be performing on par with my old phone and 4g appears to be handing off to 3g as it should. While driving on family trip yesterday the GN lost data just once and I was able to confirm that my wife's Fascinate lost service as well. The rest of the time it was seamlessly using both 3 and 4g.

I'm going to see how it works the rest of the week. Hopefully it continues to impress.
My phone is still working well since flashing the stock 4.0.2 ROM. I'm completely satisfied with the radio performance at this point and the 4g to 3g hand-offs are working very well. So in my case, it would appear that the issue was software related and that is good news IMO. Hopefully the next OTA update will resolve the issue.

Of course it's still possible that some users have bad hardware. If you are still having signal issues I would try exchanging the phone. If it helps then great. If not, you could hold out for the next update or return the phone and wait for them to sort the issues out. Or you could flash 4.0.2 and see if a fresh install does the trick.

I have definitely noticed stronger connectivity of late at home and other buildings. My connectivity is better than what I experienced with my droid x.

How did you do that? I'm looking to get a GN later this week from my nearby Vzn store. I'd like them to reflash the 4.02 before I take it out of the store, but I don't know how. Thanks in advance.

My phone was already unlocked and rooted so I used this guide: [How-To] Return to Factory State (Unroot and Relock) - RootzWiki

The process wasn't hard at all, but I had a few issues setting up the SDK on my 64-bit Linux install.

I'm not sure that they would do this for you at the store, but don't let that be a deal breaker. There are plenty of people who haven't had issues. Others are reporting that performance is improving so maybe it's just a coincidence that I flashed the ROM at the same time. I would get the phone and see how it works and then worry about it. I did it because I wanted to see if my problems might have been software related before exchanging the phone. Plus, I needed to un-root and lock the phone before returning it anyway.
