Do you really experience signal issue with your GN?

Do you own a GN, and experience the signal issue?

Did you get a replacement card for the issue you were having?
I stopped in right before closing and the guy who was there insisted that the problem is with the network right now. He said they have been having trouble with some Alltel towers interfering with their other towers and said for me to just sit tight until these network issues are resolved.

In the store I had -63dBM with 4G which was better than both the display GNex and Razr so I felt pretty good about that.

As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot, the signal went to 3G so they must have a network extender or two or three in the store to get those kinds of signals.

I showed him my screen shots and he was clueless about them and said what is the app you have that generates those? I told him that it was just the settings that come on the phone. They were trying to close up so I didn't take any more of his time.

Have any of you experienced issues in the time it takes to connect to the 3G/4G network? I keep my data off while in wifi areas, when I turn it on it can take more then a minute to make a connection. Once I get a connection my speed and reception is good. Any one else have this issue?

I just got off the phone with VZW technical support and they told me that in my area they have an open trouble ticket for a SIM card problem. I didn't ask her to tell me the details of the trouble ticket but I told her about my error message. She told me to take out my SIM card and put it back in and then see what happens. So I did. I only got the message once so I will see how things go from here.

I just installed the 4.03 radios. I look forward to seeing how they impact the phone. It is really easy to install these radios and just as easy to go back to the 4.02 radios if they don''t work. I have never flashed anything on my phone before this, just so you know where I'm coming from.

3g to 4g transition seems to help with those radios but signal quality is still the same. The phone drops connection at random. Amazon is sending me a replacement but they are backordered, so I am waiting to get the new phone to see if its my phone.

I've actually completely lost mobile and data connection twice today. Once while on a phone call and the other time while sending a text. As soon as the connection was lost I had it back within 10-15 seconds but it was still somewhat annoying as both the call and text were work related. Luckily it doesn't happen too often.

So, while I don't care about "low" signal I do care about consistent network connectivity.

In another thread, someone posted about an app called 'Fresh Network'.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.freshnetwork

Out of curiosity, I tried installing it onto my GN. Before running it, my LTE signal was -103dBm. After running it, it became -83dBm???? Well, it got back to somewhere -90dBm eventually. However, at each different location, it seems to be catching the best possible signal strength for my GN.

It does not seem to have anything to do with maintaining the stable signal. However, at some specific location, if you happen to have very weak signal or lose it completely, it seems to restore the signal a lot faster and better, than my old way of putting the phone to airplane mode and put it back on.

At least, this app might be able to bring your GN to the best possible network connection at the certain location in the certain time.

It would have been nice if this function of the app was automated and integrated into the stock baseband....

Whatever fixes they've rolled out after the outage seem to have made the network stronger. I'm getting the best signal in my house I've ever gotten on the Nexus.

Tried it and it made my signal worse. Toggled airplane mode on then off and signal went back to normal.

Really? Interesting. I would recommend you to try a couple of times. It seems to settle down to the certain number eventually. The app basically seems to do what you just do manually with the airplane mode, but more batched process with some clean up of cache.

And it looks like it also can refresh the SIM to choose the closest tower. When I was on t-mobile I was getting miserable speeds one day, and the CSR refreshed my SIM so it would choose the closest tower.

Whatever this app does, it worked for me. I'm getting the lowest dBm readings I've yet seen on my Nexus, in an area where it has struggled. Like I said above, though, I think whatever they did to the network in response to the outage also fixed some of my issues. My speeds are about back where they were on the Rezound, if only a bit slower.

I am a believer that their is a batch of bad nexi running around. I have not experienced any issues whatsoever......so i was in a store tonight with my nexus, a rezound, the store nexus, and another samsung phone????......anyway i look at signal strength (3g area) on the rzound and its got 4 bars - 68dbm. I look at the store nexus and it shows 3 bars -83 dbm....the other mystery samsung in the middle shows 4 bars -70dbm. So now im like oh noes....nexus signal problem strikes again....until i get my nexus out.....4 bars -70dbm. I know its just anectdotal and could just be shear coincidence....but im convinced their is a bad batch of low signal having, battery eating nexxi out their.

...as an aside i took pics with the rezound and my nexus....same light, same distance, same everything......it was much less effort with the rezound...but i used the steadiness of a surgeon when taking the pic with my nexus and.....the nexus pic was much better to my surprise, more detailed and the color was truer. It is nearly impossible to be steady enough when taking indoor pics. But when u are it really takes a pretty nice picture.

After today I believe the issue is more so related to how the handoff process is coded in the phone rather then actual signal issues. I just as many of you have had the issues of the 4g being weak/dropping/coming back/not coming back, and the 3g doing the same. Today I knew I would be out of town and set my phone on CDMA only and I had no issues with it dropping the 3g and I put it through a decent test. I live in the Syracuse NY area and had to travel North, where signal can change quite often and I had no issues. Yes my phone was lit and Yes I was watching it, as I was using the GPS. I traveled the back roads to Rome and Poland with no issues. I will bet if I had my phone set on the LTE/CDMA setting I would have had several complete drops and long periods waiting for tower/signal handoffs, as I have seen that problem right in the Syracuse area where signal should be fine. I think I will just wait it out and hope google will fix the handoff bugs in the radio. Yes I also notice the decreased DB signal in the status, but again I am betting that it has something to do with the phone picking distant towers at stupid times randomly, maybe adding to the slow and sometimes unneeded handoffs. Try it out a bit and see what y'all think.

Good input. Thanks! As I keep using my 3 GNs in my family, I am more and more getting convinced that the issue is hand-off / authentication problem in the GNs' baseband.

I spoke with a VZW tier 2 support this evening and they said:
- They were aware that out of the box the majority of GN had reception problems.
- That they expected Google to have the next version of ICS, (with a supposed fix to the reception problem) ready by the 2nd week of January.
- That as soon as VZW got the update it would be released in batches of course...

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. In my house I usually use my wifi network but I have tried turning that off and using 4G as a test. The number of signal bars really doesn't matter because 4g in the house is faster than wifi.

In the past work contractors would have to go outside to make phone calls or use 3G so I think this has to do with my house location but more importantly something to do with the construction of the house, because the 3g, 1g, 4g signal varies between what floor of the house you are on.

Outside my house with wifi turned off I have 2 to 3 bars and 4G speeds rival wifi regardless of what the signal reads...it's kinda surprising because I just didn't imagine 4g would be this fast.

Phone call quality - about the same as my 2 year old Og moto droid.

i dont seem to have handoff problems. When i hit a 4g area my phone changes to 4g.....when i leave a 4g area my phone switches immediately to 3g......no data loss....no wait.

Glad to hear that. You mean EK04 radio? I have been using that radio baseband for a week so far. I have seen one signal drop since I flashed the new radio, and that was it. Since I didn't really experience the signal drop issue even before flashing the new radio, I couldn't see whether it was better or not.

Anyone else using the new EK04 radio?
