Does it really help to restart the phone once in a while?

Depends on the phone and how stable the software is... I've had phones that had issues with particular versions where if I let the thing run for 5 or 6 days, it would start to slow down and run like junk. But I've had others, like my 6P now, that I've gone as long as two weeks without a reset without any ill effects.

It certainly doesn't hurt your phone to reboot it regularly.

Restarting the phone is one of my first troubleshooting steps. If your phone is laggy or is just not running right, a restart is a good first step.

I reboot once a week while the phone is charging. I find that is the best time to do it while I am not using the phone.

It helps if you are having issues that restarting can remedy.
I've found that on occasion where different things stop working or don't work correctly that a restart can give you a clean start and puts things back in order. This is true regardless of brand or OS.

Yes it fixes some issues, also having a removable battery gives you the option to completely power it off. I have had times when the only way to fix an issue is to pull the battery. That said, I will only buy a phone with a removable battery.

Mine is really not laggy. I just saw a post that he restarts his phone everyday. So I thought there's another reason aside from troubleshooting the phone. Lol thanks!!

I'm no sure who he is, however it is not necessary to do it daily. Can't hurt anything though really.

In Verizon app they suggest that for health of phone to restart periodically
