Does "restrict background data" block text messages?

Hello, I think I shot myself in the foot, trying to stop apps from sucking up CPU and data, by enabling "restrict background data" in Settings, on Samsung Galaxy sIII mini. Since I did that, I missed a half-dozen texts about a meeting.

Thoroughly confused. AFAIK Text/SMS does NOT use cellular data so it seems crazy that the "restrict..." setting would block inbound texts.

Is that really the case? Thank you.

Were they group texts? Group texts get sent via MMS, which uses mobile data, and that might be affected if you restrict background data.

Thank you B. Diddy. Yes indeed, they were group messages and I bet that even though each reply was from just one member of the group, the reply also got sent using MMS. I really appreciate your explaining this for me!
