Does the Top LED serve any purpose?

I got the Droid on release day in November, and ever since I've NEVER seen the LED on the top of the phone light up.

Only the LED on the Right side of the phone has functioned for incoming SMS, Voicemail and other notifications. Just wondering what the top one is for.

Moto Droid or HTC Droid Eris? On the Moto Droid there is only two lights. The one for SMS and Email and the light where you plug in your charger. That's it.

I have the Moto Droid. I know about the light where you plug in your charger.

Only 1 other light? Well then what is the other "LED looking" thing just above and to the left of the notification LED? Dang, thought I knew this phone inside and out, haha.

That is a light sensor that detects the amount of light and will automatically adjust the brightness if you have that enabled.
