Hi

So i don't want to send my mobile number to random companies or people i phone, but i do want my contacts to know its me.

Now i know i can change this is call settings but what a pain in the ass i'm constantly changing the setting or forgetting to change back.

Is there an app which knows im calling someoen in my contacts list and will automatically send my number so they will know its me calling but will withold my number when im calling some random company that is not in my contacts list.

It really seems a simple request lots of people would benefit from but i can't seem to find anything, mybe its technically difficult.

Ta Pete

Welcome to Android Central forums. This is a great question and has some simple solutions.

My first suggestion would be a service. Something like Google Voice. This is a free app on the Play Store that attaches to, and shares information with your regular Google account. Google Voice gives you service like a second phone. Voice gives you a second number that you can call and text from and receive calls and texts to like a second phone. It also offers visual and regular voicemail. If you're not familiar with visual voicemail the service translates your voicemails into written text that you can read like an SMS or email. With Voice you can give business and annoying solicitors your GV number and then block them or send their calls directly to VM without answering the call. There is also a call screening that asks callers to identify themselves before ringing your phone. When it does ring it announces the caller or their phone number if they don't say anything, and gives you the option to accept or deny the call. And just like with your regular number you can display as much or little as you want, as far as names for caller ID.

There are other services like this but I haven't tried or used too many of them. I believe Tango is still like this, but it requires both parties to have the app/service. If you look at other services like this beware that some may require both parties to have the service.

That was the easy way, maybe you're more advanced than that, or maybe you just enjoy a challenge. In that case you could try something like Tasker. Tasker is an Android automation app that can change settings on your device, display messages, and automate actions on your Android device. It works with logic statements like, IF, AND, OR, NOR, if you're familiar with those terms. If the phone rings between 7a and 4p, do the following... And the actions can be stacked so that one trigger, starts multiple actions or chains of events. The thing with Tasker, first it is a paid app, which I know turns some people off. Second, to use Tasker you need to learn Tasker. The plus to that is, once you've got the basics you can move on to more advanced things up to and including turning Tasker profiles into mini apps of their own. There are large communities online to help users create profiles, get help with solving problems, and see and use other people's creations.

Just like with Voice, there are other similar apps as this at the Play Store, but also like Voice, I only used a couple of them and really only have experience with Tasker.

I asked Google if there was a way to display your name only for contacts and phone number for anyone you call not in your contacts, and it was unable to find anything related to this. Maybe when I bump this thread someone else will have other ideas.
