Dont understand multiple contacts- Delete ? Join ??

I had my contacts moved over from my Previous phone and they show up with the little orange
phone Icon. I guess I synced with g-mail and now have duplicates of MOST but not all
contacts with google symbol How does join work and which ones should I be deleting.
Dont want to delete and then have them come back with some sync

Join just merges the two contacts. What happens is you go from one phone and one email contact to one joint contact with both.
