Downloading images on Android Pie (9)

This is one of the few things to I haven't been able to figure out. On my previous device, running Marshmallow 6.1 if I did an image search and liked a picture I could press on the image and you get the obligatory Share/Download option. If I chose to download it, the image would automatically go to the Download folder icon that appeared on the screen (looked like a regular app). And from there I could move it either to my SD card or the device's physical storage. The image would also sometimes appear in the Pictures folder as a Download.

I don't seem to have that option on Android Pie 9...or I don't know how to use the available features. I mean I can download the images then I get a prompt "Open with Files or Pictures"... then I choose, but while I can then open the individual image, I have no option to either transfer or move...and once I close the image I cannot find it anywhere on the device...

Any information or help how to deal with this would be welcome... thanks...

Go to Settings>Apps, select the Google app, then Permissions, and make sure Storage permission is turned on. After turning it on, downloaded images will go to the user-accessible /Download directory. If the permission is turned off, they go to a restricted system directory that only the Google app can access, called /document.

Thank you. It is working now. It's one of those duuhhhh obvious things, but it's the simple things you forget...so once again thanks 👍👍

Nope, I don't think it's obvious! I'm not sure why the default setting for the Google app is to have Storage permission turned off. Anyway, glad it's working for you now!

Hmmm. You are actually right. Come to think, I don't think I've had that happen on any of my previous devices. Could it be some security reason? Or a software bug?

One more thing I've noticed. So while
everything works, if I download an image and let's say I chose to move it to my SD card...man the device is slow as hell moving the images from the downloads folder to my SD card folders. Even moving a single one is slow... selecting multiple images to move is even slower...

Never had that happen with the previous Android OS versions until Pie 9.0...

I don't know when it started happening with the Google app, but for whatever reason, that's the default setting now.

Can you test another SD card? I'd wonder if the card might be getting corrupted.
