Downloads NOT from the Market, Problems

Today i doenloaded the free game from gameloft, in doing so i had to uncheck the box that I can only download from the market. Will downloading apps and games from other sites not the market cause viruses and other problems, such as giving out secure and personal information? If so how do I delete and re secure my phone, THANKS!

Any application should be checked out before you install it. As far as I know, they don't install themselves yet.

To change this setting:

[Home] > Menu > Settings > Applications > "Unknown sources"
