Droid 2.1 question?!

The frustration doesn't really come from the whole lacking pinch zoom. We have Dolphin (works better than the Milestone browser), the 2.1 pinch zoom gallery and the ported pinch zoom maps. It all really boils down to VZW and Motorola holding back. The Droid pulled hundreds of thousands away from other phones (Blackberry, Palm, iPhone). Yet even though the competition T-Mo released the Nexus with a better chip and OS, Motorola and VZW have not done their part to keep people happy. The whole Q1 update timeframe is lame. They know when it will drop, its all part of their game plan. Yet they will choose to release it when the n1 comes. They did it with the 9530 (waited till the 9550 dropped) and the 5.0 update.

I will not be sell the phone cause of the features its lacking, I will be selling it do to the marketing schemes that VZW plays. I want to get the updates as soon as they are ready. I refuse to be held back till they feel they should release it.

Let me give you an example. Your wife is cooking dinner, you can smell the awesome meal. You have been anticipating Dinner cause your lunch was weak. Yet everytime you ask if its ready she says "not yet". You can see that your plate is there on the counter, its getting cold. You ask a few more times and get the same answer. You look out the window and notice your neighbor is having an awesome dinner. He notices you looking and says "hey come over I have a nice hot plate for you". Do you stay and wait till she wants to feed you? or Do you grab your coat and join the dude next door having a fresh hot meal?

Well, it all depends on whether I want something different from my wife later that evening....I suppose the metaphor fails us there.....

I like pinch zooming as much as anybody, but is it really that important that people are willing to sell their droids? Personally I like it so I use Dolphin, but I don't think it's a deal breaker. So you double tap to zoom. Is it as cool? Maybe not, but it works.
yes I was alittle bummed when the N1 came out and I am still very impressed by it, but pinch to zoom is certainly not what puts it over the top.
5 home screens- So much more important. I tried the port that's been posted but it was too buggy. But that's what I feel is sooo much more useful. Plus, the new flyout animations are beautiful.
I'm reasonably sure we're going to see Droid with the same OS as the N1, it just doesn't make sense that Moto wouldn't push it on VZW's flagship phone.
But it's pretty unlikely that I'm going to consider selling my Droid and switching to WinMo so I can pinch and zoom. On the other hand, if people are going to switch the N1, that's their choice, but making such a HUGE deal of it just seems a little overkill.

Wasn't planning on switching because of a lack of Pinch to zoom.

Apparently the meaning of my post fell flat.

I do not wish to own a device that will not get the continuing support and innovation that I desire. If I drop several hundred dollars on a phone, I damn well better have it get updated very regularly!

This pinch to zoom thing is just one of many nails in the coffin that have been happening with the android phones. I bet that the hero owners are mad that just a few short months after they got their shiny new toy, a bigger, badder, better device hit shelves, and again with the droid to the N1.

Want to make that sting go away? Continue support for those not-so-old devices of months past!

Lets say you own a copy of windows 7 starter, and then windows 7 premium comes out a week later. Annoying? Yeah kinda, but you think to yourself " I spent lots and lots of money on this and the company is sure to give me continuing support through updates and innovation!" but then that company whom you gave your hard earned money to ignores products of months past to only focus on its one.......current.......project.

Why does this happen? Money? Corporate politics? None of us really know because we aren't on the "inside"

Don't you think that when consumers jump to "the next big thing" all the time that just fuels the fire for suppliers to move ahead and leave old products in the dust? This is a consumer driven cycle, not a supplier driven one.

A bit of advice from someone who campaigned for months to get some source code.
Each of you needs to direct your complaints and requests to Verizon. Complaints about kernel source for the Hero to Google and HTC went largely unanswered, and it wasn't until a concentrated effort to demand the software from Sprint that things happened. Google and HTC's stance was that Sprint is the party that we were in contract with and Sprint is who needed to address our concerns.

You all have no beef with Google, or with Moto, as they didn't sell you anything. If you're unsatisfied, you need to address the party that profited from your purchase. Verizon is the company that has made and possibly broken any "promises". I can assure you Motorola has the source for the latest 2.1 update. You can get it too with a simple email to Google, there's no need to wait for it to be cleaned up and checked in.

Stress to Verizon that you were promised timely updates, and mention the bugs that still exist in 2.0.1. Don't act stupid, and don't threaten. When they get the picture that Droid buyers are in general unsatisfied, they will respond. They make a fortune, and they want to continue to make it.

Oh I whole heartedly 100% agree!

Remember when things used to last? And people didn't buy a new "whatever" annually?

Right, way back in the day!

Just saying that so many people want to dog google/motorola/verizon for these decisions, when in fact we as consumers are the force behind these decisions.

It's just amusing to read some peoples perspective on a freaking phone update. Lived your whole life up until last year without android, now go crazy about not getting an update.

I'ts unreasonable to expect updates to go to all phones at the same time, every update is different and every phone is different and every dev team is different so we should just expect this to happen instead of complaining about it, it's not like oems have "forgotten" about droid users or hero users or whatever it's just a normal part of the update cycle.

I can't wait for everybody to back-peddle and talk about how awesome the update is once its out. all will be forgiven soon enough. Just be patient. Everybody here is totally jumping the gun.

I agree that letting the responsible party know that us consumers would like some action!

Now if someone could find a proper email or phone# to voice our concerns to, that'd be awesome, I'd start a thread with that info. Now I am not asking for verizons tech support email or phone number, I mean contact information that can actually make a difference.

Who's with me?

All I have to say is have fun switching devices every 1, 2 maybe 3 months just to get the biggest baddest thing just to regret it a month later when the next big thing comes out. Technology is advancing so fast these days that it only takes weeks for something to trump the previous thing. Having this mentality and impatience will not only dissapoint you but rip your wallet to shreds month by month :).

Now if you have a little patience you will wait for Moto to optimize 2.1 and we will have it on our awesome Droid and then we will have flash which will be awesome as well! I cannot wait but I will not go buy a N1 (Partially because I like my slide out keyboard) just to have android 2.1.

But to each his own.

Again, I apparently am making people think I am "impatient" for the update.

Let me clarify for everyone here, I am not one of the people pissing their pants over the fact that my update isn't here and now.

My entire post was simply showing that Moto/VZW are not going to support multi touch for the Droid reguardless of what OS version it is running. All while multi-touch native isn't a HUGE deal (although my picture gallery would benefit greatly from it), it begs the question; "What else will moto/vzw decide to not include that every other Android device will have?"

What else might they take away/not give?
Will our 2.1 be stripped down?

All I am saying is that I would like continued support for my devices. And thats ALL I am saying.

Thank you.

So multi touch is the main issue here... If the N1 didn't get multi touch yesterday you would have nothing to argue about.

Multi Touch is NOT a huge deal in fact its more of a gimmick. I can see multi touch a huge deal on a tablet or tabletop but on a small screen like the Droid it just seems pointless.

No, multi-touch isn't the main issue.

How many times must I repeat myself?

This IS NOT about the N1 getting Multi-Touch.
This IS NOT about the Droid not getting an update right now.

As I have stated (three times?), my issue is simply one of concern, since Moto/VZW seems to not want to give the Droid native multi-touch, what else are they not going to give the Droid that others have?

So this isn't a N1 argument, this is a "what else will VZW/Moto not give the Droid users?" argument.

They will give us what they want and you will be happy with it. Thats how it is with any carrier and any phone manufacturer.

I'm still getting the N1 when it comes out for VZW. My contract is up and I will not renew it. I will just buy it and connect. :p

I can careless if the Droid gets multutouch. The beauty of android is that they don't need to give it to me out. Of the box their are devs that will port it over from the milestone or n1 it has been done and will continue to be done. What I worry about is them trying to kill root

You know what really grinds my gears...multi touch...F**K YOU multi touch.
I'm just looking forward to all the updated app like gallery, music player, and mostly the clock of all things. Strange I know...but it looks to be a lot better to have at bedside.

You can have all those without 2.1.

Also, remember the G1 the google phone what OS is it running? 1.6... Yep. What about the Mytouch? 1.6 still yep. Both "Google phones" produced by HTC. Now we see the N1 with 2.1 and a maintenance update like every Android phone out there.

Who here wants to bet the N1 won't get 2.3 or even 2.2 for that matter?

Now we have the Droid which Motorola has even come out and said "YOU ARE GETTING 2.1 AND FLASH".

Honestly I feel lucky at least knowing we are making some sort of advancement in the future which is 2.1. No one knows if the N1 is going to get the next OS when we know we are getting 2.1. Especially when the last two "Google phones that are actually HTC phones made for Google" stopped at 1.6 in the US.

I say be happy we know our direction when the N1 doesn't.
I say be happy we are getting 2.1 AND Flash when the last "Google" phones stopped at 1.6 (In the US).
I say if you really want multi touch flash your phone or use guides out there to switch out the apps on your phone :).
