Simply? No. You need to be rooted and be able to change the build.properties file in /system to change the build number so that the update checker fails to find an update.

Correct me if I'm wrong, can't you just not take the update? I know it will keep asking....

I wouldn't try that. If it times out at the prompt and you don't catch it in time, it'll auto install it. How....helpful of it.

I want to stress...no, STRESS....that what I'm about to tell you does not, NOR WILL IT EVER, apply to OMAP4 phones. Those are physically incapable of what I'm about to say.

DJRBliss, i.e. the master that finds our Moto root exploits, just released one MOTHER of an exploit....he unlocked the bootloader on the RAZR HD. Let me repeat that....he unlocked the freaking bootloader on retail RAZR HD phones!! How insane is that?! Now see above and don't bother asking.

I have a Bionic so I know this doesn't apply to me, but was wondering if this would work on the RAZR HD MAXX as well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only difference between them is the battery, right?

This is in my opinion why they lock it, so stupid people don't sue them later.

I'd like to be able to say that I don't see how anyone could think they could sue the carrier (who, as noted, requires the locked bootloader) for losing their phone or having it stolen, but we all know that there are folks just chomping at the bit to sue someone for something.

That said, it's still silly. Most of the stuff I wouldn't want someone to have are stored on my SD card, and that's something that can be removed easily enough. And, even then, I'm not worried enough to pay the $4 for the pro version of Where's My Droid, which allows you to remotely wipe your SD card and/or phone

I don't think people understand fully the real reason they lock it. It has to do with the radios and not allowing someone to flash a rogue radio. But that's another story for another time. Their claims of protecting their network are born out of the fear that someone will create a rogue radio and screw up their network. However, there have been enough unlockable devices where that's shown to not be an issue.

There are multitudes of reasons. None of which we're going to discuss here. NONE of them are "valid" which is why they want to prevent it. Short answer? CDMA sucks royally. One of the many reasons VZW wants to get away from it.

No. None of the current phones will work. And before people start in with the "they can't make you..." nonsense, I point you to when Sprint bought Nextel and shut down that network. You had one of two options...buy a new phone or use the breach of contract to switch networks without an ETF (the option I chose when I came to VZW). You'll be faced with the same choice when VZW eventually shuts down the CDMA network. I don't think it's coming "soon" but within a few years. By then most people will have rotated off CDMA phones anyway.

Got it...do you know if that future system will be compatible with global GSM systems? That has been a nagging problem for me...albeit not "often"...just on vacations which have frequently been to Asia (as my wife's from HK), and I've never been able to use my vzw phone, but fortunately had a company BlackBerry that I could plugin an HK or China SIM card.

Would be nice to have my personal (vzw) smartphone to use with a foreign locality SIM.

A lot of the phones these days are full spectrum meaning GSM/LTE/etc. Once CDMA is out of the picture it'll be even easier cause it'll just be full spectrum LTE across the board. Even our Bionic is GSM capable, for example. VZW even unlocks that functionality from time to time and call it a "world phone". Even though ours are capable, they've not done that for us. Jerks.
