DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Still build 23? For me, it's a lucky (i.e. I like the) number...my wife's birthday.

Maybe we'll see thr release of build 23 on the 23rd?! ;-)

AFAIK it is 23. I haven't heard anything at all since the soak emails went out. My time frame of this weekend is a guess based on historical data.

Do you recall whether this includes that VZW crapware that held up previous builds?

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

No. None of the current phones will work. And before people start in with the "they can't make you..." nonsense, I point you to when Sprint bought Nextel and shut down that network. You had one of two options...buy a new phone or use the breach of contract to switch networks without an ETF (the option I chose when I came to VZW). You'll be faced with the same choice when VZW eventually shuts down the CDMA network. I don't think it's coming "soon" but within a few years. By then most people will have rotated off CDMA phones anyway.

They're just now shutting down the iden network though..

Because so many commercial users used it. But it's been shut down for regular consumers for quite a few years.

What's everyone's expectations for how jb is actually going to run on bionic?

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

I'm not expecting miracles, just a somewhat smoother interface and less herky-jerkiness. I'd be satisfied with that. Google Now is what I really want.

I am clinging to the very outside hope that I will be bumped up to 1.2Ghz since I missed the last one. But I know it is doubtful..

So I have a question on them switching to VoLTE. I got in on the doubled data deal verizon offered. I have read on sites that they confirmed with verizon that once you are on the double data it stays on there for the life of the account as long as you stay with 4G. Do you think when I goes to VoLTE that they will use that as an excuse to kick us off of it? Its still 4G.

I'm wondering if VoLTE is going to use data? And will it count against our data usage?

No. Will not happen.

VoLTE will not count against your data plan. I do not believe they can use that as an excuse to force you into a new plan.

My impression to date has been that under VoLTE we would have only a data plan. Voice calling, text messaging and Web browsing would all just be data, and the number of radios the phone would require would be reduced accordingly. Is that not the case?

Yes, that is correct. However, VoLTE and text messaging won't count against your data ratio from what I'm told. So even though they consume data, it won't count against you. Similar to how XFinity treats their on demand stuff on Xbox 360 and TiVo. It uses data, but, doesn't count against your cap.

They stopped marketing iDEN devices in May/June of 2012. Not exactly "years". ;)

BTW, while VZW is working on VoLTE this year, 1xRTT and EV-DO will likely be around in some way up until around 2021.

Updated: Verizon Wireless to sunset 2G and 3G CDMA networks by 2021 - FierceWireless

Aparna Khurjekar, Verizon's vice president of global strategy for M2M, confirmed the sunset date to FierceWireless during a meeting here on the sidelines for the CTIA MobileCon trade show. "We are giving a decade worth of pre-warning," she said.

However, after Khurjekar made her statement to FierceWireless, a Verizon spokeswoman elaborated on the issue.

"The date Aparna referenced while talking to you is a guideline that we are providing customers who have to plan, fund and transition large enterprise projects to the faster speed networks," said Verizon's Brenda Raney. "We haven't made a sunset decision like our competitors."

Raney also provided the following statement on the topic: "The Verizon Wireless 2G and 3G networks will be available until the foreseeable future. ... The Verizon Wireless 2G and 3G networks will be available as long as necessary to support customers who may have mission critical projects on those networks."

The more important play I see is by mid 2014 when more devices launch with just 4GLTE and no fall-back to 1xRTT or EV-DO. It'll probably be 700MHz and 1700MHz only for LTE on Verizon for awhile.
