Still trying to determine where to start...

I'd start here: Install Ubuntu 13.04 | Ubuntu
I'm biased towards Ubuntu simply because Canonical (the developer) makes it painfully simple to get started and they've done a heck if a job of limiting how much you have to use the terminal, a huge asset for Linux newbies (myself included, but I've come to knowish and love the terminal over the past few months).
I love the look of ubuntu and it's pretty simplistic but of course I have hardware issues it's a pretty simple install process
Wait, are you saying you can install a Linux environment inside of Windows to complete this? I have Windows 8 on a partition of my MacBook Pro, so if I can run Linux in an environment on my Windows 8 partition, I am all about it.
Also, the stable versions of Linux for my system are 64-bit and Moonshine has 32-bit libraries, has anyone had success in doing this with a 64-bit Linux system?
I'm going to do the revzone since I have windows 8. I installed sdk and am trying to do a helium backup before I go anywhere.

The moonshine process seemed very simple, but I've got a lot of friends helping me out on this one. I've never so much as messed with my phones in any manner like this. So I'm a complete n00b. My set up right now:

I'd turn on Hyper-V and install Linux on a VM. That's what I'm gonna try once I am done with my WP8 trial I'm going through....
I'm not going to cloud this page with a huge image but wanted to share my set up..... cheers!

Last I checked Hyper-V still couldn't do USB redirection. And no VM solution that I'm aware of can do it seamlessly and quickly enough for Moonshine to work. (Moonshine will timeout if it takes more than 60 seconds for ADB to reconnect after a reboot. I think it takes a minimum of 40 seconds for the DNA to bring up USB, leaving -- at best -- 20 seconds for your USB redirection to figure out what it's doing. For reference, my phone takes 75 seconds to bring up USB, meaning Moonshine failed outright for me, and I had to use RevOne.)
Just boot a Linux LiveCD. Getting creative isn't worth the hassle.
Tried again and couldnt get past chmod 755 :-(
