Droid Does Contest Counter: Timer & Waiting Room

re: Droid Does Contest Counter: Timer & Waiting Room

The way I take it is... they weren't asked to take part. They were told something would be showing up.. enjoy. (subtext: help us market our stuff wink wink).

That's exactly how it worked, which is why I didn't actually know what was going on until I finally got off the plane yesterday and got the case (and why it took so long for me to get our code uploaded).

re: Droid Does Contest Counter: Timer & Waiting Room

Lol I completely disagree. They just don't care about this stupid marketing campaign for moto/vzw. Does that make them idiots? They didn't ask to be involved nor were they asked if they wanted to (at least if you go by what they're saying).. They're just doing they're own thing and they don't care about unlocking this dumb video for a bunch of nerds so they're having some fun with it. Sorry... lets take a step back and agree that its just a stupid video for the stupid contest guys. I never heard of boingboing before yesterday and I'm sure I'll never hear of them again, and I doubt they care about that either, lol.

If any of you guys are really obsessed with the still-locked 5 seconds or so of this silly video and angry that you can't see it, the only people you have to blame are the ones at moto or vzw who chose to send the code to boingboing.... for all the effort they decided to put into this marketing campaign, they really dropped the ball by not making sure they picked someone who was interested.

Someone in VZW/Moto's marketing department may get an @ss chewing or fired over this. I can see the point BoingBoing is making, and I'm okay with that, but the idiot who choose the sites only got part of it right. Android Central would have been my #1 choice, and BGR *may* have made my list, but I doubt it. There are so many other good sites out there that actually care about this stuff.

Good job VZW Marketing team!

re: Droid Does Contest Counter: Timer & Waiting Room

Actually if you go on the market and do a search for Droid Bionic you can now download the app the video will make you aware of when it is complete. The video is a promo for a game called Droid Bionic Arena which uses Augmented Reality as an engine to allow people to scavanger hunt in the real world and find virtual prizes hidden regardless of where they are playing. Finding an item puts you in the running to win one of the 768 prizes they will offer. Each game take X amount of time and you can register for up to 4 entries per game. The first game takes place in 62 hours and 49 mins.

I agree, stupid choice on VZW's side to pick Boingboing.

However, I don't see why Big Red doesn't strike back and enter the code themselves and make BoingBoing look like they betrayed their followers and succumbed to Verizon's marketing scheme. Who are we gonna believe? haha. It sure would upset the apple cart. And after this I doubt Verizon would care about any bad PR it got from BB.

wrong, biongboing was a good choice because of the fact that they now have people who would have never been aware of the bionic. android central and the like would have went to droiddoes regardless.

with boingboing their advertising to a new market...

just because the guy runs boing boing isnt saying he is interested doesnt mean that all his followers arent either. I actualy think vzw/moto did a great job with this

This amazes me. Who are these people in marketing? Just absolutely awful idea to not make sure all sites would be on board (they probably assumed AC and BGR would due to their ties to the industry, joystiq to a lesser extent).

I just cannot fathom the process that went into picking BB. What did they draw random names out of a hat?

Except... BB don't list the product or the website. More than anything its Android directing people to BB not BB people to DroidDoes.

If they wanted appeal like that include a CNN Tech Blog or WSJ Tech blog, something like that. BB has way too much of a rebellious streak in them to play along.

so you dont think boingboing readers went to droiddoes to check out the "evil marketing ploy" that their site was apart of?

LOL Not sure rebellious streak is the right phrase. Maybe pretentious or pompous would be closer. On the bright side, no company will likely send them any gadget giveaways after this little fiasco.

Its kind of a slap in the face of Droid-Life to not be picked.. why would verizon ever pick boingboing over droid-life is beyond me..

Droid-Life is primarily focused on Droid from Verizon and that's exactly what Droid Bionic is..

fail by VZ.

I agree, Droid Life would have been an appropriate site. But Like mentioned earlier, BoingBoing was necessary to reach that untapped crowd. Droid life is full of Droid followers that are in the know (like AC) so it wouldn't make sense to push more advertising on them. The Missus works in advertising and branding and she supports VZW's move to reach BB's crowd whether they supported it or not, though she did say viral marketing is a thing of the past and doesn't work well anymore. So.... I uh still cannot wait to get my hands on this phone. Seems like my OG is getting slower and slower by the minute... As if Moto was making it slower to haste my purchase of the bi-OMG!

I'm sure some did. I'm sure it got through to some people and got them interested. I'm generalizing here, but I think this type of marketing could be a turn off to many BB readers and I also think they're not the type to want to participate in this time of thing.

Yeah, I don't know that its easy to define that site. I'm an on-and-off BB reader, so I'm definitely not meaning to talk the site down, it's just... different. They tend to do things their own way and I think the "we probably wouldn't be interested in this" thing is spot on. I don't see how someone who reads/knows about BB would honestly pick them. Oh well, I've probably ranted about this long enough.

DroidLanding DroidLanding
Authentication complete. @BoingBoing code input successful. Stand by for full video unlock…. #BionicARena

re: Droid Does Contest Counter: Timer & Waiting Room

Anyone else unable to download the app? I'm on my OGD

Totally not worth it. Apparently it doesn't even work on the OG Droid. Nice failure there VZW :(

LOL Wow, that is bad. A lot of those Droid 1 users are likely upgrade candidates. Between BoingBong and this, Verizon's marketing group needs to step up the game a bit.

Why does the counter say 60 hours and 37 minutes until sweapstakes??? what happened to the counter that was counting down until noon today??? :-\
