DROID Incredible to Receive OTA Update Adding 720p and Mobile Hotspot

Buying Tethering does not increase your "unlimited" data plan past the "unlimited 5gb limit". So you are getting the same amount of bandwidth. what difference does it make what is using that bandwidth.

I know why they want to charge for it, but for the consumer it makes no sense that they charge for it.

From what I understand the 5GB limit only applies to tethering itself. There is a separate meter for the unlimited data plan on your phone itself that is actually unlimited.

Usually the phone plan is "Domestic Data" while tethering is a different counter all together.

Edit: Here is a thread that sort of explains it.

This gets confusing, and I agree unlimited(not really) shouldn't differentiate how one uses data, but like it or not Verizon wants to charge an additional $29.95/mo for tethering. At least this is what I was told.

I use the free PDAnet app which works nicely for tethering. I wonder how many people on the different forums posting this OTA information think they just get free tethering? I suspect it's going to be one of those features(if it's actually coming), that you start using, and freak out after you get the next phone bill.

If tethering and not paying the additional monthly fee, then don't do anything stupid with it like p2p, mass video or audio streaming. Check your sites, read some email do a little browsing, possibly some light downloading and they will never say anything. Been doing it for years. Now if you get stupid with it and start bit torrenting, watching hours of youtube, stream movies across it etc then yes red flags will go up and they will end up saying something. Some people say they do that anyways and nothing ever gets said but there have been examples of people being charged overages.

My concerns are that using the OTA's Wifi Hotspot feature will easily allow VZ to know your tethered, unlike apps like PDAnet where the only way they know is what you stated in your post. Getting stupid with how much you use. At some point all the carriers are going to police the data usage as more people then ever are using smart phone data plans, and the cell site infrastructure isn't growing at nearly the same rate as users on them.

Oh the Wifi hotspot app if you try to use it without paying for it, it will take you to Verizons website to pay before you can actually surf around using it if I had to guess. Or at least thats the way it worked if you tried it on BB. PDANet make your data go through the same process your browser on the phone uses and masks the data as you being on the mobile browser.

I believe when LTE gets here they will do the same thing AT&T did and offer up different packages with caps and overage charges. They know people are tethering and not paying, they aren't stupid they are just trying to find a way to monetize it to where you have to pay for it. So I wouldn't be surprised if eventually Verizon doesn't swap to a semi al le carte where you pay for X amount of bandwidth per month and you can use it either phone only or tether or both.

First Things First

I'm glad they are bringing this stuff, but this smacks of the Storm all over again. That phone was half-baked and pushed to market before it was ready. This really makes it seem like the Incredible suffered the same fate. Hardware-wise, there is little internal difference between the DInc and the EVO, yet the EVO shipped with all of this functionality. That tells me that it all should have been included in the DInc from the start, but Verizon pushed for launch before HTC was ready. Then HTC got all busy with the EVO, and only now are they turning their attention back the DInc. More commentary on Verizon than the phone, but it does leave me feeling a little less satisfied.

I definitely understand your concerns, but I don't think I agree, entirely. From what I've heard, HTC traditionally builds features into its phones that are unlocked in stages. I think the overall build quality shows that the DInc is not half-baked. Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the phone, with the exception of the battery. I do believe HTC should have released this phone with at least a 1500 mAh battery, instead of the chintzy 1300 mAh.

Also, before releasing all the features, I would rather HTC/Verizon made sure all the basics work as advertised - so that they address the problems some have reported with reception, audio quality, grounding, etc, before releasing other features that require additional support.

I hope this boot screen and 720p video recording isn't just a root thing. I know the previously they had something where you could change the boot screen to basically what was had before. So I hope this is true because I would love to have better video camera recording. Something to show up those iphone 4 users.

Well you don't need root to change your boot animation, it's extremely easy to do as well. The 720p video I could care less about. If you ask me, as far as showing up iPhone users, there is only two ways right now the iPhone is beating us the Retina display and the dual cameras. Dual cameras I could care less about or I would have an EVO. So really you got nothing you should be trying to keep up with the iTards with you are ahead of them. Their battery is just as bad, but they can't put in a bigger one like we can, their OS sucks, and it's locked down without jail breaking it. Oh but don't worry they will have one with an 8MP camera and a redesigned body(to fix the antenna issue lol) next year called the 'get this' iPhone4S that will only be $299!! TADA! grrr idiot sheep.....

did this ever happen? i didn't get any. people have been posting 16th. just wondering.

It looks like they are making sure the update is complete before they push it. Way better than Rim's release and pray attitude.
