Droid is Engadget Smartphone and Gadget Device of the Year

i dont see the big deal about the droid.

what makes it better than a palm pre?

1. Bigger sharper Screen
2. Quicker loading apps
3. More consistent GPS, better Nav app.
4. More apps to choose from
5. Arguably better keyboard (not as cramped)
6. Better onscreen keyboards
7. Better network. Sprint is good, I had them, but Verizon provides more consistent 3g IMO.

I do love WebOS and see it as having lots of potential but IMO, the form factor of the Pre hindered it and it came out missing features that it should've had from the get go (Video recording / 3d capability etc).

I agree. The Pre could have been a stellar device, but some hardware features were screwed up while others were completely ignored. It should have been an all touchscreen device or side slider like the Droid. The Droid has proven to be a great device. I had my doubts about it at first, but now I see why it is a great device.

besides the marketing of course..

Better hardware, better screen, more of a full featured phone, better performance, what else theirs a lot I had them both, the only thing I miss about the pre is multitasking, but even that was a headache at times. to many screens open with only one

i think the one handed concept palm went with is great, its easy for me to get on a bus and use my phone with one hand.

what i keep hearing over and over again is that the performance of the pre sucks, that simply isn't true. i've been using a pre for 8 months, and it is a fast phone..

I had a pre for several months and I have to disagree, it simply didn't compare to the Droid performance wise. Also I remember quite clearly running into all sorts of memory related issues when I had so many windows open on it. I often had to restart to clear things up so I can't agree with what's said in that video. I also don't use task killers and rarely have issues with my Droid. Even the Pre Plus is getting performance complaints over on Precentral. If you look over there you'd find countless posts from me defending it
but that's before I got my hands on the Droid.

Thats because everyone at Engadget has an iphone and they're all fanboys

I agree, all too often they throw logic and reason out the window to perpetuate a fanboy based argument. I don't read Engadget very much anymore because of that.

To them, no carrier but AT&T matters. In actuality, over half of their readership is on Verizon.
