Droid Maxx vs Blackberry Z30 Fight!

That argument doesn't work. Because when you buy your new BB, dozens of new phones are still coming out anyway! You have choice and a super platform that's going to stick. BB I'll say will go the way of Palm. BB folks are smarter, Palm hit their own detonation button, dummies, by aligning with ATT and going Palm OS leaving all of us out in the weeds...and if you're going to learn a new system, why not the one that's taking over? How could they miss that? But that said, BB is in deep weeds and there doesn't look like a lawnmower or 4x4 are coming by.

Actually no, because the Z30 is the high end lack berry for this year it might be one next year debut for now this is the best blackberry to get. The is no nexus 5 coming to make you regret signing that 2 year contract for your HTC One.

There may not be another blackberry (although this will be the third in less than a year, right? Z10, Q10, Z30?), but there will be plenty of other phones with better hardware and different OSes.

But, you sound convinced that the BB is the phone for you. Go for it!

I learned long ago to stop looking at the market for devices after I made a decision on a device of any kind - phone, computer, tablet, car, appliance, whatever. There will always be something better. But that always means that I'll find something better when it's time to upgrade the device. There is no point in having regrets. Either something is worth what you pay for it today, or it's not.

I would opt for the Maxx. I like Blackberry, just left a Z10 for the Note 3. College you will need to access online bulletin boards/apps for your specific school/ class. I'm fairly certain that you will have a headache trying to do this on BB right now. The others are right in saying BB is in a precarious position financially right now as well. Good luck

And this is the Maxx section...so if you'd rather bank on an HTC or Nexus, that's a whole 'nuther matter. But Moto still has the best radios (it is still a radio/phone) and with their new features...I don't see anyone doing something similar anytime soon. Besides, who cares? In two years, time for another. When you buy the top, you don't have to look over your shoulder. Contentment is a good thing to hold onto.

My college does of have any apps. I'm studying finance, if anything I would like to edit docs on my phone which any phone nowadays can do. The only thing stopping from the Maxx is that there is no Microsd card slot. I would have to move all my stuff around, and I will be selling my Razr M so I won't have it to access content on there.

There actually is an adaptor which fits into the micro/mini USB with a card. Another thread on here, maybe a week or two old. Way cool.

That's USB otg which, is a hassle because I have to carry and adapter and the USB card. Who knows if I lose one or both at some point.

Slow updates, though that's all Verizon phones
Extra steps when I want to move media

Blackberry Z30:

Something better is always coming along, so with that mindset, your best bet is to wait until Blackberry is out of the hardware business and then buy their final product. Then you are looking at other platforms and their specs.

It's a dangerous way to view things, because we will never be content. Whether it is the specs of the device, or the price drops after we buy it, there will always be some reason to be upset about the purchase.

---

Like someone else said, the fact that you are defending the Z30 considering more than the Maxx makes me feel like you will be happier going with the Z30. Even if the Z30 turns out not to be the best option for you, there are loads of other devices to choose from. Might as well get something different first, then go along with the pack if that turns out not to be the best.

---

Regarding your Pro/Con list, it's more or less accurate, but I would also caution the expectation of BB10's future development. While HP was still somewhat updating WebOS devices after axing it, it's hard to say how BB will support BB10. It's not unreasonable to expect sooner updates, but just something to consider. Also, the whole thing about Android updates is just another reason for people to complain. 4.3 brings little to the table for many Android owners, and even still, manufacturers and carriers are pushing out updates much more quickly than before. The Maxx is expected to get the camera update very soon, and I'm sure KitKat will be there soon as well.

Google is also trying to update the apps independent of the entire OS, which solves some of the problems by not requiring Carrier approval.

I was trying to keep the conversation fair towards Blackberry as well. I don't think they are going away anytime soon. I'm purely looking at what the devices can do now and not the company itself.

In that case, why are you worried that a more powerful Android phone will come out a few months later? ;)

I agree with others: you seem to be leaning to the Blackberry. Get it. I'm sure it will be a great phone for you. There is nothing that makes Android, iOS, Blackberry OS, Windows Phone, etc., better or worse for every single user. We are all unique, and what is important to me may not be all that important to you.

I picked a Maxx for the following reasons:

- Every once in a while, I find myself in a place where I have a really weak to non-existant mobile signal, and it can be really hard on the battery. Like you, I wanted a phone that would have a battery that would last all day without needing to be charged in a situation like that, if possible

- I have used Android phones for four years now, so I'm accustomed to it and have several apps purchased. However, I also have an iPad and an iPod Touch, and have lots of iOS apps as well. I wanted either Android or iOS going forward

- For years I have used an Android app called SMS Backup+, which not only does what it says - backs up SMS and MMS messages to archived conversations on my GMail account, which can also be restored later if I factory reset the phone (except for MMS messages - they cannot be restored.) Howeer, it also creates calendar entries in a Google calendar of my choice for all calls made and received, with details, etc., and can also backup and restore call log details to archived GMail conversations. There is nothing like that for iOS; not sure about BB or Windows Phone, but, again, I was leaning iOS or Android.

I had an update available in early August. Based on those three big things, I was looking at either the Droid Razr Maxx HD (which I wasn't excited about, being an old device) and the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, when I heard in July about the Droid Maxx, that phone really seemed to fill the bill for me. The GS4 would probably have been fine, but I decided to go with a device I knew would have good radios (remember that I occasionally find myself in weak signal areas), and Moto has always seemed to have good radios.

Anyway, like I said, everybody has different things that they are looking for. It will be hard for us to prioritize one thing over another for you (particularly for a phone or OS I have never seen nor used.) I think you'll be fine whichever you choose. Just pick one and don't look back and regret when you no longer have a choice (i.e., after the 14 day return policy.)

I AM IN THIS EXACT DILEMMA NOW!! Long time BB user and tried once going to Android that met with failure on the LG G2...now the Z30 is out and looks tempting... argh!!!
I really like the voice commands you can give the Maxx tho...seems nice. Not sure about Active Notifications til I have some experience with it. Z30 looks pretty cool tho and all the users that already have it on crackberry are loving it...I guess they're biased though... the professional reviewers have all liked it too from what I've read.

That's the thing, no one really knocks the Z30 (except BlackBerry bashers), and its pretty capable phone. The ability download and install apks from the internet on BlackBerry devices running 10.2 is very cool. Hell the android runtime on the Z30 (4.2.2) is a higher android version than my current android phone (4.1.2). What I will do is compare this and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in store, both are up to date and have external storage which I value highly and both are said to have good battery life which is paramount in a phone I buy.

Z30 is available to check out in stores. I just messed around with one yesterday. However, they were not in stock in store and the guy I talked to did not know when they would be in. You can order them online with same day shipping I am told.
A few things based on what I've read here. Btw, good advice and points given here. As a BlackBerry user, I was pleasantly surprised to not see any BlackBerry bashing. I use the Z10 and one thing I did not see mentioned is the Hub on BB10. I thought it was some over hyped bs before I actually used it. It's probably the best thing about the device I've found after actually using it. You can see and respond to messages from the Hub without actually going into the app. (such as fb, Twitter, BBM, ect.) Also multitasking it seems has always been best on BlackBerry, however I understand that Android is getting better all the time.
The Z30 utilizes Paratek technology with the antenna to improve radio reception with minimal battery drain. I have not seen this for myself obviously, but I understand it's pretty revolutionary technology.
BB10 is still behind in apps, though not as much as some suggest. They do have some pretty cool games available with more coming all the time. They do seem to be behind on the multimedia apps, such as HBO GO, Xfinity, Netflix, ect. I have not tried sideloading any of those, however. And Crackle has made a "made for BlackBerry" app, if you don't mind the same commercials repeated..;-)
As others have said, I buy what I like and don't worry about what's coming out 6 months later. But, if you are that concerned, Verizon does have the Edge program available. If you do have buyers remorse, or things change drastically for BlackBerry as a company, you are only committed for one year. A good way to hedge your bet it seems. Also, specs wise, the Z30 and the Droid Maxx seem very comparable. The Maxx is actually something I am considering myself, but now that the Z30 is out, and I like the OS, I'll probably be getting the Z30. Good luck with your decision....

Thx guys. So I ended up getting the Z30 and I like it, but it's sucking a LOT of battery. The guys on the Crackberry forum are saying the phone is "indexing" everything...whatever that means. I've had the phone off charger for about 7 hours and the battery is at 10%. Pretty pathetic. They are saying after a day or two everything is indexed and then the battery usage goes way down. If it doesn't improve I'm going to have to return it for the Maxx. I need at least as good battery life as my iPad3 (which is supposedly the worst out all of them) and that got the same use and is on 78% still.

wow! that must be something wrong with your Z30, try to restart or maybe try to turn off while you charging it and see what happen.

My z30 had bad battery at first to, got better but not as good as people on cb10 claim. I'm a heavy user though.

Ended up going with the Moto X, the DROID Maxx was too big and transferring to the Z30 would've taken some time. With the Moto X I just had to use Motorola migrate and boom all my content from RAZR M to the Moto X transferred over no problem.
