droid razr maxx & jelly bean update problems

This is my first smartphone. I chose the RAZR Max for what was on it. The options. This is no longer the phone I bought. Different programs different options. The iPhone was my second choice. I had many phone calls with Motorola . When I wasn't getting anywhere with the rep I asked to speak with There Boss . I made it up to the head of the corperate applicantsy office . Angela was her name . She said there was no one above her to speak to and gave me a fax number for my attorney because if I want to go further I would have to take Motorola to court. They don't care what they did to their customers. They all ready got our money. They got deeper pockets so no worries about law suits. Maybe a class action suit will open their eyes . They'll lose . FACT they represented the upgrade as an update. FACT they never gave warning that information would be lost. They never gave warning to back up phone before update ( upgrade) These are the things that you see prior to UPDATING a PC . Usually you see a Eula prior to an upgrade. Didn't get that either

Eula was included in your box when you purchased the phone. End User License Agreement, there is no change in licensing in the update. You don't get a new license. Window's gives you a new license.

They mentioned in the update log what was being removed(available to read before saying yes), if you had read it you would have seen it as being removed and best guess you would have declined it. It's easy for me a techy to say, duh backup, when upgrading software but I can see your point as a new smart phone user, sorry this wasn't mentioned more specifically.

Most issues are caused by incompatible software. Something that no android phone can prepare you for. Too many variables, Apple+1 on this issue because they make this process a little smoother on the developers and I forgot to mention they have like less than ten models to support and nobody but them builds them.

You have been the unfortunately victim of random upgrade issues. Don't worry, we know windows, Mac, and other OSs never have similar issues in their issues. Talk to any good tech about OS updates and the good ones will tell you in 90 percent of cases it is better to install fresh than do the actual upgrade, backup first of course.

You had a terrible time getting someone to help you over the phone, I understand your frustration. Best thing to do is to get a good android lover to help fix your phone. I just helped someone update to JB on a galaxy S II just a few hours ago. I fixed the issues we came across because I knew what to look for and he is happy with his phone.

I have helped literally 100s of android users. Friends, family, and online. Your at a point that you need someone physically there to troubleshoot your issues. An experienced android tech might even be able to back up your internal memory before clearing it in the fdr.

I doubt this will bring comfort or just get rid of your frustration. There were some wrongs on all sides.

Thanks MrHost! I think you gave a very good answer & probably the most concise response to the op's frustration. In fact, it's the Best explanation about Android os updates/upgrades .

My boss' phone just did this yesterday. He has over 500 contacts and ringtones set for nearly 50 of them. Two things we noticed. First, when you go into a contact, you can't see what ringtone is set for them. Even when you select "Set Ringtone" in the menu, there is no dot next to the current tone.

Second, we were having the problem you were having. He has an app called Zedge and before the Jellybean update, this app stored ringtones on his SD card. He did an update on the app and now, because of how Jellybean handles things, it created a new folder on the internal memory, so none of his ringtones were there. I had to use the "Files" app to find those tones and move them to the internal memory under the "Ringtones" folder. But now he has to go reset all of his contacts. And since he can't see what they currently have, he doesn't know which ones really need changing.

Here's a question that may have been asked/answered elsewhere but you guys seem on point so I will ask here. I received the update and it messed me all up. I hated the new themes and colors, my outgoing texts kept saying sending (green arrow) even though they were sent. My camera was having a seizure between portrait and landscape. Amongst other problems so I went to my loa Verizon store and complained to Customer Service. They in turn sent me a 'certified like new' replacement in the mail which I got the next day. After getting my phone back to ICS which I'm very very happy with my phone has been getting the damn OTA Popups telling me that the phone auto downloaded the update and I could install now or later (12 hours). Does anyone know how I can disable that damn popup so I don't hit install now by mistake and screw myself yet again?

I haven't heard of a way to disable it. However, upgrading it now would be best as it was likely an issue with one of the apps causing the misc issues you had or hardware gone wacky for some reason.

Your actual answer is no, not without rooting it that is.

My Host, I am a novice to the inner workings of phones. I'm sure given the right course I could do it but I'm completely out of the loop when it comes to rooting. I'm not sure how to root the phone and then after its rooted how to disable that feature. If you have a moment could you assist me in achieving the end result?

In all of Android Central's Forums for devices there are a collection of "Sticky" threads kept 'stuck' to the top of all other threads. Look at the top of this one for " Sticky: How to Root, Install Safestrap, and custom ROMs" ( http://forums.androidcentral.com/droid-razr-maxx/211222-how-root-install-safestrap-custom-roms.html ) and begin your study there. Braden has done a world of good for many folks and we all thank him for starting this Sticky!

I just got off the phone with Verizon complaining about upgrading to Jelly Bean and now half my txts still show the green arrow when I hit send. Some send and some don't. They said this was a known issue and the fix was to do a factory reset on the phone. Thanks Verizon.

I know you're angry at Verizon about that but in reality it is a fault of Android that an upgrade with data from an older version can sometimes cause problems.

It's Android as a whole, really. This problem plagues most devices across most manufacturers.

True. That's why it's never a bad idea to either clear the cache partition after a major update, or to go as far as doing a factory reset and reloading all of your apps and data.

I would say it is a developer issue in general. Apps not supporting the newer changes cause over used system resources. If it were android it self, a reset wouldn't fix the issue when it is at the default start point (FDR). Now dropping apps from system that came with the phone is a manufacture issue. They should plan better for those who do use it. Instead of saying, well it's gone.

Nah, not a developer issue. In general, it's the system apps that have trouble with data from old Android versions, not general apps that you can grab from Play.

As far as apps removed from the update, that's a separate issue and was listed in the update's change log.

Dear Verizon,

You sold me a phone that was not yet ready for market, then you sent me an operating system update to "fix" the phone and "improve" performance. Since then i have had to do multiple factory resets (4) and replace the SIM card. Your "solution" to the bugs was ineffective at best. Now what do these problems mean it just a phone right nothing big, except I missed a couple of important phone calls recently because of these problems, how important phone calls can't be a matter of life and death can they? Actually, yes, yes they can, in fact the call I missed was in fact to inform me that my father had passed away! The hospice nurses called multiple times and were only able to get to voicemail.

So the solution you offer? A replacement phone, but it is most likely refurbished, because nothing says customer service and we care and we're sorry like someone else's crap!.The other solution offered was "well you could use an upgrade from another family member's phone". The best moment when i described the problems the service rep replied "sounds like your phone was part of a bad batch", if i told them oops sorry my check was part of a bad batch and didn't clear what would their response be?

Thanks,

Your Friend (insert sarcasm here)

I still disagree. The soak test would reflect more issues specifically associated as well as the internal testing before soak. They have more control with those issues. They however can not account for 3rd party apps.

So your stating above the system apps have trouble with data from the old android versions, but not the general apps. Which seems to say, that 3rd party developer apps are checked and updated prior to a phones internal apps and final release.? 3rd party developers would be more likely to have issues because they don't have access to the new code coming up and the additional changes made by the manufacturers changes as well, not just accounting for the idea it is running JB, other changes may be neccasary because of manufacturer UIs.

Just seems less likely.

I have the razr maxx and I tried everything but my phone was laggy and crappy. Finally I emailed the president of the west coast Greg Haller and his office called me back. They next day aired a Galaxy Note 2 as a replacement. Get it tomorrow. Guess if my razr maxx wont work this is the next best thing. Cheers :)

Btw Here is the link to the exec team: https://aboutus.verizonwireless.com/leadership/executive/index.html

I would suggest being very professional in your email and stick to the Area Presidents. I expressed concerns about a phone call I made to support with no resolution, the fact that the release notes were not emailed to me nor was I informed that programs on the phone would be changed when I was sent the option to update, and told them my issues with the new update even after multiple factory resets and and cache clearing. :-$
