I keep getting notification and download of the the new update but it keeps failing every time! I have tried it with z4root rooted and unrooted. I have even uninstalled the z4root. I have even tried to install the zip with the clockwork mod and it is telling me, "can't open /sdcard/su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip (bad)". Any help or enlightenment would be awesome. Thanks!

What source did you get the file from because the update should have been installed automatically as long as you was on stock build without any apps frozen or removed and unrooted.... I don't get how you have the zip file to even try to install it with Bootstrap. Besides z4root does not support GB...

I understand all of that. It would auto download, restart and quit halfway through the update on the reboot. So I did some poking around and found the zip on my sd card and tried to install it using clockwork mod. I haven't frozen any apps. The source was the ota update.

err nevermind about that file... that was the superuser update for the z4root. It still is continuing to download the update ota but can't seem to finish the install. Maybe the best thing to do is to wipe and go back to complete stock and try that...

While waiting for Gingerbread to be pushed to me, a potentially stupid question: Does it update just the firmware, or do I have to worry about backing up and restoring my apps and data?

If you're coming from a stock, non-rooted phone, you don't need to back anything up.

If you are rooted have tweaked the phone (custom ROM, removed bloatware, etc.), you need to SBF back to stock Froyo or use one of the GB leaks to manually update to the .596 OTA GB. You would require a backup in this situation.

So I can't just unroot with z4root and install that way?

As long as you aren't running a custom ROM, you can very easily use the normal update.zip to update it using the standard recovery for the X.

Also for ANYONE who needs a quick update on how to do this (STOCK)

1. Turn your phone off.
2. Hold down ?Home? and press ?Power? until the Motorola logo appears.
3. Release ?Power? and continue to hold ?Home? until an exclamation appears.
4. Release ?Home? and press the ?Search? button once.
5. Your phone will now enter recovery.

So just to make sure I've got it right, just download the regular update file and then use that without unrooting? And I have seen that it has been rooted already, where are those instructions, i use wireless Tether too often to not have it lol

Are you running the "OTA" leak?

Not rooted, yet. I was going to and then the announcement of the GB release came so I put that on hold. I'm currently running stock firmware. Good then, I don't have to worry.

To boot into stock recovery for GB it has changed a bit:

1. Power phone off
2. Hold Home button and Power button until you see the Android guy
3. Press Vol Up & Vol Down keys at the same time (instead of search button)
4. Use Power button instead of camera button to accept
