Droid X or Thunderbolt for first Android?

Oh I agree. I was looking for a Droid X off contract on eBay or here. But they are going for $300+. I can't justify paying that for a phone I'll only use for a few months.

So I won't beu sing my NE2 for Droid X.

I'm too scared to deal with CL. Because of potential phone scam and because of killers. I don't do CL at all.

I did check freecycle.org however! No dice. Haha

Yea that is true. You can always have them meet up in a VZW store so you both of you can go in and see if the phone's ESN is good and working then once that is working, give that person the cash.

I've done it before where I was selling a phone and met up with the guy at VZW store to activate his phone then gave me the cash.

It doesn't feel as safe with CL with all the crap going on these days but at least it's safer to meet up at a common/busy area.

I think you'll only have a couple of months wait for the Bionic and I believe it will be the new creme of the crop, and stay there for some time. With a dual processor, 4G and 4.3inch screen, I'd wait for it.

+1 I wouldn't use my last NE2 on a phone that is practically the same as the X (minus FFC, LTE, and voice/data at the same time).

But those three things are not important to me. Hardware-wise, the TB is just not worth it.

I suggest the HTC. I currently have the DX, and it's a great phone i've had since launch. While not nearly as bad as Samsung the update to froyo for us was well after they said it was going to be released. That would have been ok, except it was a very buggy release they ended up pulling for quite some time before rereleasing a proper version. This left a lot of people who got the ota update with a disfunctional device for too long. Mine phone also has tendency to get very hot on back of bottom of phone by speaker. Before this I had Eris, which was great except for being so small (big hands and fat fingers) & not very powerful. If there was a large HTC device last summer I would have gotten it. The DX is very slick looking and feels great/light in hand. I wouldn't suggest getting it though also because of horribly short shelf life, eris got end of life only few months after release, this phones already got its replacement (Droid x2) being talked about. Since they got rid of annual upgrades you'd be stuck with phone for long time if on contract.

If you would have asked me a month ago I would have said get the X. ROMs make phones last a lot longer with updates so software shouldn't be an issue unless you want a stock experience. One thing that sells me on phones (which may sound weird) is whether or not it has Gorilla Glass. I am a true believer and stand behind it.

Now me personally I'm sticking with my DX for a while because I wont see LTE for a long time. Its only been within the last 2 years that I got 3G. Hell ATT still doesn't have 3G where I live. I have to agree with the people above I would wait and get the bionic, of course I'm a Moto fanboy. :)

I see what you're saying but here is it from my POV:

Coming from a BlackBerry 9630 that I've had 2 years the HTC Thunderbolt is a huge upgrade for me. I'm not coming from a Dinc or EVO or DX. This will be my first Android

It's not dual core but from what I've been reading the duel core shines for gaming. I'm not a gamer at all. I can wait 2 years to get dual core when there are new ones out.

I like the look of Sense UI over blur, the HTC seems to get updates nicely and HTCSense.com support appeals to me. I will root it but I'll never load a custom ROM. I never loaded leaked or unoffical OSs on my BlackBerry. Mainly because I don't have a PC.

Ok, and the TB is releasing before Bionic. I'm just so tired of my BlackBerry!

Well, I can certainly see your point of view. I, for one, won't be buying another Moto phone. They know their hardware and radios. Their software, however, sucks.

Also, 4G probably won't be in my area for years. I'm not sure what the requirement is going to be regarding data plans when purchasing an LTE device. But I can imagine they are going to force people to have LTE plans if they buy an LTE phone.

Another problem I see is losing the unlimited data plan. That goes away, when changing your plan now.

As far as I know I haven't seen any tiered data plans or LTE plans announced from VZW. I'm hoping it'll stay $30/month for TB data, unlimited.

From what you said here, just go with your gut and get the Bolt, I'm sure it'll be a great phone and I'm sure it'll serve every purpose you want in a phone. Plus, in my opinion, it looks pretty damn cool.

I definitely wouldn't get an X right now on contract, and it's looking like you'll only be waiting at most 3 weeks-ish for the Bolt. I don't do much gaming, either, so the dual core doesn't do much for me, but I've kinda become a bit of a fanboy for Moto after my X, so I'll probably upgrade to a Bionic this summer. I'll probably check out some other new stuff in the 4G Android arena, especially with there being so much of it on the horizon, but I'm betting I'll end up with the Bionic (I only do 1 Year contracts anyway, so I get new phones every 10 months).

My area is on the list of VZW's 4G 2011 plan, but who knows if that'll happen, and who knows if I'll be too cheap to pay for the 4G service.

Back to your question and thought, again, go with your gut, get the Bolt if that's what you want. It'll be LIGHTYEARS ahead of your Tour.

About a month-ish ago, I was in the same boat. Knowing the TB was coming out, I still went ahead for DX. I got sick of my BB as well. This was a big upgrade for me since I never owned an Android device. Still knowing that I could of waited for the TB and now the Bionic, I still do not regret buying the DX. I still love it.

Blur on the other hand sucks but LauncherPro is a great replacement for Blur. I have it rooted and no custom ROMS either. Knowing that the TB and Bionic is coming out and been using the DX for a month, I still would of upgraded. My BB was just a piece of crap and RIM has been horrible with their device quality. As much as people might not like Blur, BBOS is so much worse.

I was in the same boat. I was tired of my Blackberry and pondering whether or not to hold out for the TB, Bionic, or just go with the DX. Since I live in an area that won't see LTE for quite some time, 4G was really a non issue. My wife still has her old BB 9630, so getting a phone with a front facing camera for video chat wouldn't really make sense either.

So I decided to go with a CPO Droid X and I have been very happy with it. It blows my old Storm 2 out of the water and, after I got used to it, it handles my messaging needs just as well. I do have a few issues with sound profiles and ringtones but that is a work in progress. Overall, it is a fantastic phone.

I got it for $99.00, and by the time LTE comes to my area I will be ready to upgrade again with whatever scheme.....um, I mean "Plan" VZW has implemented to offer its current customers upgrade discounts.

Great topic!!

I am jumping from my iPhone 3GS to Android.. I can do it whenever..

When is the Bionic coming out?? I guess after this thread I'm either doing the TB or Bionic.

Bionic release date is unknown at this time. I've read April/May and also June. We just don't know yet.

It looks like a great phone if you can hold out!

Also right now Motorola has a pretty major unfixed bug in their Android implementation. Push is not working on some types of email (like corporate sync / Exchange).

My Active Sync on my Hotmail on my DX works flawlessly.

My push works on my device and I have corporate sync. And where there are issues with my work server then it doesn't work but when that happens, I'll get an e-mail saying server has issues and needs a reboot and they do that and it's fine again which has been going on since we changed over to a new server and they are working out the bugs.

Before the new server, it was fine though.
