This is less reliable, but when I put in my pre-order at my local Best Buy (Nashua, NH), the guy said he was expecting only 10-15 for the actual release day. However, he was just one of the mobile sales guys, so he wasn't entirely sure... he even said he knew nothing about appointments or anything... so we'll see. Good thing I was #1 on the pre-order list there though. :)

I also called my local best buy today, and by chance got the manager of the mobile dept. I told him i was worried i wouldnt get the phone on the 15th even though i am #1 on the preorder. He said not to worry since i am #1. but he also told me they are only going to have 17 on hand launch day, and that they have over 25 preorders. Calls to schedule an appointment to pick up the phone will start going out on the 14th. Calls will be made in the order the preorders were made. So that put my mind at ease. Now that i think about it i should have asked, if they were opening early. 3 more days everyone....The anticipation is killing me.

^17? Is your town a big or small one? Mine is somewhat small... just trying to compare and see what I can expect my BB to receive. I'm preorder #6, but I'm still worried... this phone is bad for health! lol

I think worst case scenario here is that if you can't get it from Best Buy with your pre-order, you suck up the $50 (and spend the gift card on something later like a case or something) and head over to an actual Verizon store where they're expecting 100+. Honestly, in retrospect, if I knew that the Verizon stores were going to be so well stocked, I wouldn't have bothered with the pre-order from Best Buy.

You can return you GC for a refund if you buy the phone at Verizon.

I called up my local BB and they told me they do not do returns on giftcards. I'm in the same boat with pre-ordering there (I'm number 5, the first of the 2nd round that isn't 'guaranteed' one on launch date) and just going to the Verizon store to see if I can get one there. I've got my NE2 coming on the 15th and BB won't honor that. I'd rather go to a Verizon store, pay $199 now and get my $100 MIR to bring the total cost to $99 for a spankin' new DX. I'll just use the $50 giftcard at BB to get something else. My desktop at home does need a wireless network card so there you go. :)

Here's a copy of the original Pr-order FAQ.

BBY - UPDATED 7/11: Droid X by Motorola Pre-order FAQ - Best Buy Forum

In there, you'll find the following:

If I have canceled my pre-order of the Droid X by Motorola and want Best Buy? to refund the gift card associated with it, can I?
If the gift card has not been used and you are in possession of the original receipt, yes. The purchase of a pre-sale gift card falls under our standard return & exchange policy which can be read in full here.

Well the reason I'm glad I got it from Best Buy, is that I don't have to wait 4-6 weeks for the $100 rebate, which I've had to do many times in the past.

And the fact that it's supposed to rain on Thursday morning :)

Its small but its the only Best Buy around. The next closest only did 3 days of preorders. I would guess that at #6 you should be ok. I doubt any store would get less than 10
