wireless tether for root users - wifi hotspot without the extra $20 for 1 GB
Titanium Backup - freeze the bloatware with paid version, well worth it.
Rom Manager - full system backups (aka nandroid)flashing themes, and other mods such as build.prop files that make minor tweeks to speed of phone, etc.
Root Explorer - adding & removing files.

Rooting allows you to make lots of modifications to your phone that you weren't able to do or have access to prior to rooting. have fun

Dude, I thought once I was rooted I could manage my phone, for instance delete stock gay apps that I do not want...the only thing different that I see is a gay ninga icon on my app menu that says superuser! So what do I do next?

????? Do you realize that asking a question in such a tone like that may not get any answers to your questions... the previous post was telling you some of the items you needed to proceed... You can remove apps that you don't want from device but without the backup app to back things up you can not reverse changes if you send device on for service... There is a number of apps on market to add features that you couldn't use originally unrooted but you need to read up on backing up before you proceed or you will not have ways to fix a mistake if you make one.

Sorry

I see your point...didn't realize it came across that way. Just frustrated with the whole system. Kinda funny I can use it to build my own computer...do what I want to with it...but not my phone because everybody has to have their fingers on something.

dude...i copied your advice to a microsoft word file...thanks...i will use it when I figure out what i'm doing...just don't understand....some other people thought I was abrasive...if I was, sorry!...just pissed off...thinking rooting was jesus to my phone, i guess...just didn't and still don't know where to go after rooting

After three failed attempts, I was finally able to root my Droid 2 this afternoon. Now I can install apps that require root (e.g., Tether) and I am prompted to allow root access when I run them. But when I go into Settings-->Applications-->Manage Applications to try to delete the apps I don't want (e.g. CityID, Blockbuster) the Uninstall button is STILL grayed out, just as it was before I rooted. I saw in the forums here that the ONLY way to get rid of these apps is to root the phone to uninstall them, but now that I'm rooted, I STILL cannot uninstall them. What's the trick?

dunno yet dude...I have the same problem...that's why I'm pissed, If I find out I will let you know...if you find out b4 me do the same plz

Here are the links to some of the cool apps that only work if you are rooted:

? ShootMe : Screenshots. Best reason to root.
? AdFree : Ads disappear from apps and Internet. Second best reason to root.
? Titanium Backup : "Freeze" apps without uninstalling. Backup to SDcard. Needs BusyBox.
? MetaMorph Pro - Theme, patch, and mod your phone. Advanced users only. Guide.
? NinjaMorph - Modify apk's right from your phone without ever hooking up a PC. Experts only.
? Wireless Tether For Root Users - Free

These are from the Getting Started with Android - Tips and Tricks section on Applications.

Thanks Craig, I too took the Root Route today thanks to the Z4Root app. Installed Wireless Tether and works perfect.

Will slowly start to tweak. Can you lead use newbies to a comprehensive page on best practices for rooted Droid X's?

Again thanks.

Don't get angry just because you don't actually know what you did to your phone.

Try reading some on this forum. There are a bunch of "Hi, I just rooted my phone and it looks the same. What does root do?" threads available to read. Some actually have good responses.

I love the "Shoot first, then ask questions" practice people take with a $600 phone.

If you want to go beyond downloading and using Root Access apps, check out the ROMS/Hacks forum. Be prepared to do lots of reading and feel severe temptation. Themes, custom ROMS, full OS backups all await with root access and a little Green Hat hacking.

After rooting (I used the super duper rooting method), I installed the Invisibility app. It's been great. I can walk in bank vaults and take whatever I want, as well as going into girls locker rooms. Nobody can see me! It's awesome! I think I'll download the TimeTraveler app next.

Being rooted rocks!

I hear a lot of people talking about bricking their phones so I did it. Now what do I do. This brick does not look like a real brick. Now that sounds stupid but that's how this all came off. Do some research about things you hear and see. If you didn't know what root was about or for you should not do it just to do it. Root is great when you put in the time and work to do the things you can do with root.

Found the answer, and it was fairly easy. Just had to refine my search a little. The answer is here: Limitless DROID ? Blog Archive ? Rooting 101: Bloatware.

Once you are rooted, people suggest you download and install Titanium Backup. You can use this to test whether or not you are rooted because when launched, it asks for root access and if you can authorize it, then you are -- obviously -- running as root.

Now when you launch Titanium, you are given a list of all applications installed. Default pre-installed apps are color coded in red. Click on the app you want to uninstall (e.g., Blockbuster). You have three buttons to press, one to back up the app, one to restore it and -- highlighted in red -- one to Uninstall the app. Click on Uninstall and you're done!

This would be one of the first things that should be included in a "Post-Root guide," which is discussed extensively in another thread. But this information should be included somewhere on AndroidCentral. Weird that I could find it on LimitlessDroid, but not on AndroidCentral. Well, I guess this is an appropriate place to type, "There... fixed that for you."
