hey guys i recently bought anew Droid X with bad esn off of craigslist and i was trying to update it to the new firmware update that came out because my version is
Version.2.3.1.5.MB810.Verizon.en.Us

and when i go into my settings>About Phone> my System Update option is Grayed out???

is this because the phone has a bad esn or what?

well, you have the most recent system version on your phone right now. the new 2.3.340 update that was announced today hasnt officially been released yet (though it is possible that its trickled out to a few lucky people, but i digress).

Whew

Thank you for clearing that up for me I was about to freak out because I want to be able to update my phone without rooting it

No it's not activated because I don't have verizon I'm just using the phone over wifi and later on in the future if I decide to keep it, and not switch it for a htc evo I'll flash it to metro pcs

Without it being activated, you can't get system updates. I had it grayed out because I disabled my service while I was on vacation in China.
You will have you manually apply updates if you don't activate

Not to sound mean, but what is the point of having it then? Get a tablet. I sure hope you called Verizon and made sure the ESN is clear or you'll have a nice big fat paperweight. And I seriously doubt you'll be able to flash it to Metro.

So how do I manually apply a update

And Mr.Spock
Over here it can be fully flashed to metro pcs and the main reason I'll have on metro is because I can't afford verizon at moment

. And I seriously doubt you'll be able to flash it to Metro.

They work on Cricket, I don't see why it won't work with metro.
It is a pain, as the settings do not stick, but there are workarounds such as rooting and installing a startup script to replace the settings on each boot.
Most dealers will do it for you for a nominal fee.
