Please, we don't need to bring the metal vs plastic debate into yet another thread.
I think we're dealing with a bored kid.

Good thing you have insurance. Be more care on you next One.
I learned not to put my phone on my lap, dropped my first Bold 9000 when I got out of my car. Thankfully it was just a chip on the corner.
Have to pay excess plus 12 months of insurance, will work out at about ?80.
Since when did a case cover the screen? If I dropped my htc, or any phone really, face first onto a rock it's going to shatter the screen. Why are you trying to justify your plastic when this is a question of glass?
But then your screen would be toast anyways. At least with a case you have better odds. In any case, have fun with your scarred phone.I don't know about that. If something hits my screen, or my screen hits it, no sort of surrounding plastic shock absorber is going to protect that area. I understand cases can help because of that extra bit it gives you in the front, but if it lands on anything higher than that then the screen is toast.
Actually Sir, a case, whether plastic or rubber will distribute force of impact easier. OP did not state if the phone landed on glass out hit corner first. Either way, a case would distribute the force more evenly and protect from a break. P.S. I have dropped my nexus multiple times on edge with a case, no breaks. One time without the case on, edge hit, shattered screen. My experience proves you wrong, sorry.
my phone fell off my lap today onto a hardwood floor and theres a deep gash on the back. it would happen a few days before my full body skin arrives.
