e mail problems

I have been using the stock e mail app untill I started having problems getting notifications. I have to manually check for new e mails. I switched to K9 and still not much better. This all happened after the Kit Kat update. Anyone have a solution or is it just on my end? Thank you.

make sure the auto sync is enabled on settings-->[your account]
 
Ok I think I got it to work better by using background syn when auto sync is checked, turned off for faster display of account size and count search results, and fetch messages up to 1 mg. Not sure if one or all of these seemed to fix it or what but it seems to work better now on K-9 app. Thanks all for your suggestions
