apologies if this is discussed somewhere else, I looked but I couldnt find anything. Whats the easiest way to get back on the correct update path for the rumored possible OTA update. I'm currently using the leaked GB .588 unrooted.
Or....would it be easier just to wait for someone to post the OTA update file and manually install from that?

Thanks in advance.

Good question. In most threads, the discussions quickly switch to discussions about rooted devices prepping for the GB official OTA. No clear answers as yet for stock, as far as I can tell. I plan (at this point) to wait and see if I get it. If not, I'm sure it will be made available for a manual update.

I'm with you on that ShanMan; I've resisted the urge to play around with the 595 update that is floating around...cuz I'm not sure what I'm doing. I have unrooted DroidX with 588 Gingerbread. I'd hate to brick my phone...and will continue to fight the urge to "tweak it" just a little bit. I mean, the Earth is over 4.5 billion years old; I guess I can wait another week. By then, hopefully someone will step forward and say "This is an easy way to upgrade your non-rooted phone from GB .588 to GB .596"...at least, that is what I hope will happen.

I am planning on SBF'ing back to stock and then installing the ota or preferably a deodexed build of stock 2.3.3

Hey guys - I was in the same boat as you. Officially we don't know for sure, but P3Droid (the one who brought out the other leaks) has said his contacts in Verizon/Motorola have said that you have to be on the .595 version to get the OTA. Why? Because the people who were testing got those other leaks (.591, .595) as OTAs, but apparently only .588 was accidentally sent to people outside of the test group (and hence made its way onto our phones).

If you want to wait until the official final OTA comes out that's fine, but I trust that P3Droid's contacts know what they're talking about (the track record is there) so I went ahead and did a LOT of reading and succeeded in getting myself to a stock .595. If you want to do it now (or if you need to do it after the official OTA goes out) here is what you'll do:

1) Root your .588 - this means googling "Gingerbreak". You'll have to install it (it may not be in the market, so you may have to turn on the ability to install non-market .apks). Run the program, press "root" and let it go. If for some reason it fails, just run it again.

2) Download the full odexed .591 and the full stock version .595 updates and put those on your phone somewhere where you can find them (I used dropbox to transfer the files from my computer, but an SD reader or other file transfer method would work just as well).

3) Go to the market and search "D2 bootstrap" or download it from elsewhere. NOT the Droid X bootstrap (although that would seem logical).

4) Follow the directions here on backing up and flashing a ROM. Ignore the part about rooting on that post (you should already be rooted at this point).

5) First flash the .591 version, then after it boots (don't panic, the first boot takes a while) do the same thing with the .595 version. If for some reason you lose root when you install the .591 version you can reroot with gingerbreak (I didn't lose root). You WILL lose root upgrading to .595 stock, but I don't imagine you guys will mind.

That's it. To be honest I didn't even do a restore of my data via the bootstrap/clockwork mod, I just backed up what I wanted on my computer and wiped the phone clean while doing the updates. It's a mild PITA to reinstall the apps, but Google reinstalled most of them automatically (along with my contacts) and it forced me to rethink what I really needed on my phone, so it was a worthwhile endeavor.

The only other option is to sbf your phone back to froyo, but since I haven't personally done that yet I won't offer any advice on it (although it doesn't look too hard). Google it if you'd prefer to go that route. If somehow your phone gets stuck or bricks during the above process, you'll want to SBF immediately, as a bricked phone apparently doesn't know how to charge, so you need to do it before the battery runs out (the SBF process doesn't appear to take too long, so no big deal there).

I've never had a custom ROM, nor done anything beyond a simple root and freezing of bloatware before this, but it wasn't too hard. Just be careful to follow all of the steps and it should be fine. Or wait and see what the official OTA brings in a week or so (or less?). Either way, I wish you the best of luck!
