easiest way to root the x

I too have been really curious about rooting. I hate stock roms, back when i had bb i was always updating w/ custom loads (made by BBCrackman..yup back when i was on Blackberryos website..thanks BBCrackman) So as far as the rooting goes it seems z4root is the way to go (by everyone suggesting it) but i keep seeing the term SBF pop up a lot. What exactly is that? Also, if i do root, am i able to go back to stock w/o a problem?(if for any reason I need to bring the phone back to how it was when it first got it). Basically i wanna be able to load this http://forum.androidcentral.com/motorola-x-roms-hacks/50743-gummyjar-rom.html (more specifically the Watermark theme) on to my phone. Also would b great to take out crap like madden (that verizon just pushed...running stock here) and the blur crap.

Thanks in advance to the reply.

P.S. BBCrackman, it's great to c u working on Androids now. I miss the days of waiting, impatiently, for ur files to come out for bb..ooo the memories.

EDIT: NM on the SBF q'stion. Did a search on google and found i wasn't the only one who was wondering wat SBF is...

I figured out the invisble lock screen. In the tanquility toolbox there are lock screen options set to invisble by default. Not sure why. If you change it the lock slider will show normally, but the rom keeps soft rebooting every few minutes so it's not worth it anyway.

Ok, so i finally took the jump and download z4root, Droid X Bootstrap and GummyJar 2.5 rom. Installed everything, and everything seems to b working fine. I'm trying to download a .zip file form the web (via the phone) but every time I click on the .zip file it doesn't download. It gives me an error saying "Download unsuccessful. Cannot download. The content not supported on this phone" I don't get y it's coming up, cause when i had the stock (like 10mins ago lol) it downloaded just fine. I even tried to download the same file i downloaded when it was stock and it's giving me the same error message for that now.

I would also like to know the answer to this.

At the top of the previous page is a subforum for everything root. http://forum.androidcentral.com/motorola-x-roms-hacks/

Google z4root. Its a free one-click rooting solution. You also must have Koush DroidX Recovery Bootstrap. Its in the market. Then you need to find a Rom and install it with the Recovery.

Heres a tutorial on using z4root; http://www.droid-life.com/2010/12/09/z4root-will-root-the-droid-x-2-3-340-update/

Koush Bootstrap; http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...uPXPcTXULFPKjlEKg&sig2=cCt-K5KGggtXyKlXSq87sA

Here are some ROMS;

Make sure he is on the most current VZW software. Go to about screen and verify under System version; Version.2.3.340.MB810.

Once thats done, open z4root, click the permanent root. It will take a long time, sometimes it takes two times doing this, or may not "Stick" the first time. Once it is rooted you should have a superuser and a terminal emulator app in the app drawer. Then go to the DroidX Recovery Bootstrap. Click on the "Bootstrap Recovery" and reboot phone from the app. After turning off it will boot into the Recovery screen which allows you to load .zip onto the phone, backup/restore, and many other advanced settings. This is where you navigate to the ROM that you want using the VOLUME key for up/down and the CAMERA button for your selections.

Before you make ANY changes ensure you make a backup first, then wipe date/cache prior to installing your ROM. Then install ROM, all done from the Recovery screen.

he pretty much said it all. I tried a couple root solutions and found z4root to be the most simple thus far.

I'm also ready to plunge into the world of root and ROMs, but I have a question about the process. In some of the guides that I've come across, such as the sticky in the "droid x roms + hacks" forum, it mentions that I should plug my DX into the computer and set it to PC Mode and USB Debugging. The steps that NewAge describes don't mention this at all. I wanted to know if rooting and flashing a ROM can be done without having to plug the phone into my computer.

Ok, so I've rooted and installed the apex rom with no issues at all. Just one question though. Is there a way to restore all of the apps I had downloaded before I wiped to install the rom? Or do I have to download everything again?

The paid apps, for me, were in my market when i clicked on "My Apps" which was convenient. But the unpaid I had to re download them.
