I'm just posting this here for those who want to do some OTA updates, especially those of you coming from stock and haven't screwed around with anything yet. ALL credit goes to 0mie at rootzwiki and xda forums... I'm just sticking a link to HIS thread here because I think there's folks who could use it. Read, understand, use your head... enjoy! :)

Lol...I keep going from forum to forum hoping for clearer instructions, but alas, all roads lead back to the same vague post. For those of us new to Moto, the three lines might not be enough. Read through the pages and pages of reply posts mentioning 100 different things including Cheesecake, partitions, CWM, etc...and end up even more confused which makes me laugh at the phrase "easily upgrade". I have much experience with HTC and Samsung, so I know how to flash ROM's (generally).

So if my phone is 100% stock, untouched, do I need to apply the forever root or I do not apply the forever root?

"Flash stock recovery of..." So if i'm reading it right, which i'm pretty sure i'm not, all I have to do to get to the latest version of the stock ROM 5.7.893 with root access is to flash the 55MB file through Moto's STOCK recovery? How does one get to Moto's stock recovery, if this is the case? Thanks for any help anyone is willing to offer.

Ok. Yes you need foreverroot because without it, once you update you will lose root and won't be able to re-root.

So...

--Root using Pete's One click method that's at the top of this forum.
--Purchase Root Explorer.
--Apply the foreverroot script using Root Explorer following the top of this thread : Forever root + .893 = winning! - xda-developers
--Reboot. Go right back to the file you applied foreverroot to and make sure the lines are still there saved correctly. Just do it :) If good, don't change anything.
--Now go back to the Easily Upgrade To 5.7.... thread and follow those instructions. Download the files. Make sure they are on your sd-ext.
--Power down. Hold BOTH volume buttons and hit Power. Hit Volume Down until you have Recovery selected (if you go past just loop back around, because Volume Up is your Select button).. Now hit Volume Up. When you see the Android guy and triangle with an exclamation point in it, hit BOTH volume buttons. Now you are in Stock Recovery. Follow from that point forward... install from sd card, etc.
In Stock Recovery you will use Vol Down to scroll down and the Power Button to select.

You rock. That's so much easier to understand! I only have one question, just because I want to be sure i'm not missing anything. Once i've applied foreverroot, you mentioned "download the files". By files you mean the 55MB Blur file and the webtop MOD (flashable in CWM) right below it? And I don't need to rename the Blur file "update.zip"? Sorry that's actually two questions. :-)

I think part of what confused me is that the update file is only 55MB, i'm used to ROM's being much larger, but i'm getting it now it's just an UPDATE, and not an entire ROM. <<<---thinking out loud

I believe you are correct.. Although I have not tried that on my own yet.. I'm still on 5.5.893 because I've been waiting to find a process that sounds solid for getting to 5.7.893... But if you are coming from stock 5.5.866 it sounds like his method is working for people. I'll be testing out the new methods myself later tonight when I get home because it sounds like people have finally ironed out the hangups.

And no you don't have to rename to update.zip.

And you're welcome.. I'm just spreading the knowledge as I learn it.. Pay it Forward when you see a confused person in need is all I ask.. That's the android community :)

Thanks for all your help and clarification 2defmouze. You helped make the update to 5.7.893 easy for me.

So I'm kind of new to android phones and more specifically modifying the software. I currently suffer from a non functioning webtop and was wondering what the appropriate procedure to retain MT current customizations and add the new radio and kernel from 5.7.893.. I'm on another 5.*.893b build now but webtop isn't functioning I'm also running Liberty... I just want to keep my configuration... is that possible or would it be best to reconfigure it all manually.

Plan on reconfiguring pretty much everything.. that's the easy way to put it. Think of it as a price you pay for hacking and cheating your way to upgraded software :)

Advice -- Make yourself a checklist of things to do after wiping and flashing a new ROM or software update... i.e. accounts you need to sign in to and set up, ringtones and message alerts, other misc settings, etc... It will quickly become second nature and you'll be able to do it in your sleep :)

I read somewhere that if you want webtop to work, you cannot do the upgrade in one bug jump. You have to do the incremental 5.893 -> 6.893 -> 7.893 upgrade.

I want to go 7.893, but not at the cost of leaving some hardware support out. I'm just gonna wait for the [complete]OTA, or maybe just flash the 7.893 camera apk to hold me over lol.

Not according to the link posted by 2defmouze at the top of the page. It apparently used to be the case, but has now been reduced to just one step.

It depends on what you are coming from, as far as I can tell. Seems if you never did the first OTA update, so you are still on 5.5.866 stock, then you can use the file at the top of the link I posted and get to 5.7.893 with everything, including webtop, still functioning fine.

If, however, like me, you updated to 5.5.893 before, things get more complicated, as I understand it now I will have to do the "step" process to get to 5.7.893 in steps, then recover it back to 5.5.866, then run the 1-step file to go back to 5.7.893 in order to have webtop. Which I don't even use but of course I'll do it because I want my phone to be perfect :)

Anyway, reason I haven't done it yet is because I'm waiting on Th3ory to update his ROM which he's been close to releasing for days now, because I don't want to have to wipe everything to do the updates then be sitting around stuck on stock blur while I wait for Th3ory, lol. Second reason is because I was waiting for people to have hammered out all the hiccups for people in my situation trying to update... Patience is key if you don't want to screw anything up... measure 3 times, cut once ;)

This is a great thread. I am new to rooting.... and ready to take the plunge.... But i have a silly question first. How can I tell which version I'm on? I'm assuming you're talking about the ROM version?

Hit Menu -> Settings -> About Phone... The System Version is what we are talking about. Yours likely says 5.5.866 at the beginning.

Haha we're totally in the same boat. I've restored and reflashed a bazillion times now. I think i'll wait until they finish the complete update, or hopefully, Cyanogen will surprise us with a CM rom based off ICS for Bionic.

One can dream ;)

Thought this could be helpful here... This is specifically for someone who upgraded to the earlier OTA to get their system to 5.5.893 with updated radios/kernal... then is having trouble getting from there to 5.7.893 - The latest update, has more tweaks for system, battery life and updated LTE radio file. Some folks are losing webtop and having other problems along the way... so here's the process that worked for me:

Alright Boys and Girls who are still having trouble.. Those of you who, like me, were already updated to the radio/kernal from 5.5.893 or 5.6.893 but didn't have their bloat because of ROMing and the like, or got through the process and lost webtop along the way.. PAY ATTENTION. I just completed my upgrade to 5.7.893 with Full working Webtop, updated radios, the whole enchilada. Every ounce of credit for this process goes to the likes of 0mie & dch921 who provided the necessary files and instructions, WesternClimax who came on here to just help spell out the process and link the files together, and some others (sorry if I'm forgetting anyone). Point is.. I just got through it on my first try, thanks to these guys, and along the way I chronicled the process in detail because there are still some folks who are apparently having trouble or just not that great at following directions ;) Some steps might seem superfluous but I like to be thorough and IT WORKED SO DON'T KNOCK IT :D Here's my journey over the last 40 minutes or so:

1. Used One-Click Fastboot Restore and Root for BIONIC to flash back to stock 5.5.866. Booted up. Used R3L3AS3DRoot v2 to Root and apply ForeverRoot script.
2. Installed Bootsrap app. Booted into CWR.
3. In CWR Went to Install from SD -> FULL CWR 893 UPDATE which dch posted.
4. Rebooted. Checked System to verify that I was on 5.5.893. Checked that Superuser was still present so I knew I had root.
5. Redownloaded and installed Root Explorer. Used it to check the mount_ext3.sh file to verify that the ForeverRoot lines were still present. The last line "chmod 4755 /system/app/Superuser.apk" was NOT there, so I added it back in. Saved the file and exited.
6. Power Down. Boot into Stock Recovery. Installed from sd card the file titled Blur_Version.5.5.893mr1.XT875.Verizon.en.US
7. Reboot. As in Step 4, verified system was now on 5.6.893, and that Superuser still present and functioning. At this point took note that Webtop Version read Unavailable.
8. Power Down. Boot into Stock Recovery. Installed from sd card the file titled Blur_Version.5.6.893-5.7.893.XT875.Verizon.en.US
9. Reboot. As in Step 4, verified system was now on 5.7.893, and that Superuser still present and functioning. Webtop still Unavailable.
10. Power Down. Used One-Click Fastboot Restore and Root for BIONIC to flash back to stock 5.5.866. Used R3L3AS3DRoot v2 to Root and apply ForeverRoot script.
11. Rebooted. At this point not even sure why.. just felt like a good idea (lol).
12. Power Down. Boot into Stock Recovery. Installed from sd card the file from top of first page of this thread where it says: Flash stock recovery of full Blur_Version.5.5.886-5.7.893.XT875.Verizon.en.US
13. Reboot. Verified system was now on 5.7.893 with updated Baseband Version, and that Superuser still present and functioning. Webtop IS BACK :)
14. Danced around the room joyously and smoked a victory cigarette.

Alright, enjoy. Again I don't want or deserve any credit, I'm just summarizing what I learned thanks to people smarter than me in this thread, and wrote it up in detail.

ADDENDUM: Booted back into CWM. Wiped cache and dalvik (seemed like a good idea) and installed file from first page [MOD] Webtop Via HDMI Without a Dock. Booted up. Now have full Webtop mode over the HDMI cord to my 47" LG TV. Freaking awesome! Thanks again to 0mie, dch, everyone!

Also if you are stuck at a different spot in the process let me know or check out the main thread linked to in OP, people have been working at getting others unstuck at various stages :)

Oh crap I also wanted to mention to anybody here who hasn't been following on rootzwiki.. If you've been using the cheesecake app to do the OTA updates you should note that you should NEVER let it do an update to a version you are unsure about. Right now the latest version in there is 5.7.894 and apparently it will leave you without root and no fix is available yet if you do it and screw yourself.. be aware!! :)

ANNNNNND....THEY FIXED THE HIGH PITCH HEADPHONE WHINING NOISE! I'll be holding onto my phone for a good while longer now!

Wow this is great news.

I'm delving into rooting for the first time this weekend, although I'm new to Android I'm (somewhat) comfortable on this thing.

EDIT: I now see the thread that I was reading yesterday (http://forums.androidcentral.com/bionic-rooting-roms-hacks/132258-rooted-what-next.html) in the first few pages has a lot of this information... so, I'm heading there.

I am using the 5.7.893 update and am not rooted. My question is how would I get back to .886 to get the official OTA when it comes out?
