What are the advantages to rooting a phone?

well for one thing you can install wifi tether that turn ur phone into a hotspot, and other apps like setcpu, rom manager, etc...if u installed the recovery.img u can flash different rom's, do nand backups, partion and format sdcard, and so on.... hope that helps

I tried going to unrevoked.com to get that apk file to root my hero but cant seem to get it. If i want to be able to get rid of the phone lag and the bloatware with stock rom can i do that?

I can name most.Also do this to see what the apps names are to remove.

that should show all the apks&odexs

Thats all off the top of my head there might be somemore you can delete but i can't remember right now.Hope that helps.

You need to mount as write:

su
Mount ?o rw,remount ?t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock03 /system


then rm (specified file)

You can't use this way for .7.There is away you have to grab the .5 ruu then you can use this way.
The .5 ruu is attached to the bottom of the post on xda follow second link of first post to get it.

i am a total noob when it comes to this..i have a sprint htc hero with 2.1 update1
2.32.6512 and i want to root the phone mainly to have access to wifi tethering for now....

what do i need to do to create a recovery back up? would i lose all my info in my phone like text, apps i downloaded and call history?

i've read the info but either i'm confused or scared to start the process...
