This process requires a Kingston 4GB class 4 SD card. For some reason certain SD Cards effect the boot up process while going into recovery and enables you to get ADB. People are working hard on trying to make sense of this whole situation. While booted in command prompt type " adb reboot recovery ". When it's booting back up at the white Incredible screen pop out sd card, and wait about 5 seconds or so and pop it back in so the phone is loading the sd card while it goes into the black screen with the phone and the "!". Once that is done type " adb devices " you might have to type it a couple times if you phones serial number shows up you got adb in recovery and can move onto this ( i take no credit for the next steps what so ever )public:adb_in_recovery [RootWiki]

A video from Shrek on how to get ADB in Recovery with the kingston SD card but a different technique then mine but may work for others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8mheIkQ-1o

Also check out this article by SGT-D Sodpit BEAUTIFUL THING ISN'T IT!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, if anyone needs help with the process go to the IRC and we can help out. www.droidirc.com channel ##incredibleroot if it's moderated at the time just go to channel ##droidincredible

I need to keep track of how many people got it using this method and SD Card. So if this has worked for you please select the "thanks" button below, and also take this survey for the unrEVOked team https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dFp0U0NLVHVyLUJQYk0zMVlhaGdkc0E6MQ This is so devs can keep track of everything correctly. This is vital info me and others in the irc need to get root out to the masses.

After 3 days, and probably about 500 reboots. This worked for me. I was able to get repeatable results this way too. Did mine and a couple friends, averaging 3 tries or so.

I noticed something though while doing my friends phone. At about the 5 second mark after selecting recovery, sometimes there was a black line that flickered on the lower half of the screen, and if I inserted the SD card back in at that exact point, it worked every time. But the line doesn't always appear, and didn't appear on my phone at all.

weird, but I'm rooted now, so I'm happy.

edit: Forgot to mention, didn't have to change SD cards, just the timing on re-inserting the SD card made the difference.

Well I am glad it worked for you now I am 8 for 8 on this method :).... Push that little thank button if it worked for you so I can keep track of how many people got it using this

no root

still doesnt work for me, ive tried every method i have seen online and none of them are working, sucks

I spent hours trying everything possible to get mine rooted. Turned out it was all the SD cards I was using. I kept seeing posts about people buying a 2gb microsd card by PNY and it working immediately after inserting it. 1 trip to bestbuy to buy the PNY card and 3 reboots later I had root.

I used 3 different SD cards and 2 different computers.... its all about the sd card that is used =\

Hey borgey and co!

I'm not sure if this is the exact thing I ended up doing...but I inserted the SD card at the mount/unmount/shutter type noise when going into recovery and it finally error-ed out in adb. I used the 2gig sandisk card that vzw sent..yes, I was shocked too...hahaha.

what kind of sd card are you using? believe it or not it really does matter. Kingston 4GB class 4 and A-Data 16gb class 6 have got a 100% record on this so far.

good news. the NAND unlock will be coming out really soon. i would say most likely over the weekend. this means we can start flashing ROMs and have a custom recovery ( clockwork ). you do have to be already rooted tho via adb in recovery one time to get the nand unlocked. I will post link to directions as soon as UnrEVOked comes out with them. From what they tell me it works really well and it coming out for Linux,Windows, OS X. LET THE ROM COOKING BEGIN!!!!!!!!

I don't think the memory card is the end all solution, I have done a few with 8gb cards that came with BB storms, a 16gb Moto Droid card and a 2gb chepo (all but the 2gb were sand disks). I'm sure the right card may make it easier, but it is all about technique. I have done about 8 phones so far most with the 8GB Sandisk.....just my 2 cents.

So to those who are having issues, if you follow this Borgeys method and still no luck, do it again just as he says but leave the loop running for 5 minutes. Every time I can't get it to go right after the "in/out" trick I just leave it be and it eventually works. I also posted this in the original post comments.

Good luck guys.

lol ok, well you do all the testing that me, other people, and UnrEVOked did OURSELVES then you can tell me what works and what does not. Until then just follow directions. SD Card does INFACT matter because different SD Cards make your phone boot up differently. I have proof of why some sd cards work and why some don't. Until you got FACTS to back up your theory don't post them and try to hijack my thread. If anyone is still having trouble GO OUT AND BUY THE CARD! A-Data 16 gb class 6 will also work too. Let me know if you need any help I will be more then happy to help.

Don't get me wrong here. Technique def. does matter when you do it. But SD Card is PROVEN to be the deciding factor to win this race condition when getting adb in recovery

Listen, all I am saying is I have had success across multiple SD cards, multiple times. My testing is that I have done it on many different devices with success, no more proof than you have shown us here other than your word. I never said "it didn't matter" I said its not the end all solution (please re-read next time). I even stated that the right card would for sure make it easier, I was emphasizing technique more than anything. AND I even said to follow your method, so its not a hijack.

Apology Accepted.

Sayin' Thx and spreadin' Luv

SdCard Survey PLEASE FILL THIS OUT FOR EVERY SD CARD USED!!!!! Also the next link is the results of the tests that UnrEVOked have been doing. ( which pretty much proves that sd card does matter ). The Results - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10af8yISRytFfg-pNf_vWnaQg4n5w0_EWoQBn4VP6YC4/edit?hl=en .......... You can also calculate how big of a delay to put on your sd card insertion on getting a dmsg in adb when booted. if interested on how let me know please

The survey form was disabled when I wrote this, but it was so helpful along with the other things. I tried for days from all of the posts. Getting into ADB recovery took the following:

Using a 4Gb PNY class 4 card from STAPLES
----------------------------------
start adb shell loop on computer (did this in Ubuntu)
no cables or cards in phone
trackpad boot to bootloader
plug in USB cable
recovery boot: inserting card @ 7-second scan line during white HTC screen

Does not work 100%, but gets me there in less than 5 tries.

Thank you so much!!!

please I showed proof if you would open your eyes you would see it. look at the results of the surveys that's proof enough. i did a lot of research into this and have been working besides the people who rooted this phone ( not with them but helping them along the way when they need something done ). we have PROOF that sd card matters and I just told you how by getting a dmsg in adb for your phone to calculate when to insert the sd card and that different sd cards make the phone boot up process different. so thats your proof and if you would take the time to do it yourself before you make assumptions you would realize it.

good for you man, i am glad it helped you out. that's what we are all here for. now we will have a NAND unlock fairy soon ( hopefully today ). as soon as unrevoked releases it i will be one of the first ones to grab it since i am with some people that hang in the IRC with them. so best believe it will be posted ASAP!
