Echo Clockwork Recovery

Someone posted in another thread that they upgraded without losing /su. That may be the first step in breaking this delicious confectionery wall.

Can we go back to 2.2 (factory reset), do a root and come back to 2.3.4?

I don't believe a hard reset would put you back to 2.2. Not sure really, if it does ill test rooting again like the other post said.

Ergh...tempting....if there is an exact procedure to upgrade while retaining root, we Echo users have incidentally become the Gingerbread elite.

Going back to 2.2 would require stock image. I believe this would be possible with the source code since it has been released. I'm sure it would have to be flashed somehow with adb.

Fastboot should do it. Not to sure it should be done yet but if you don't mind the possibility ofbl bricking, you could try it.

I am still trying to catch up with the Android world (from a Windows mobile 6.1 world)... so, I am a bit unaware of the fastboot et all. Any pointers to this?

i am just finding this thread. i just got my echo today and it was still on 2.2. i was able to use z4 to gain root. and then upgrade to 2.3.4 and still have root access. i have busybox installed as well. from the looks of things no one is working on anything for this device, i will look into building a CWM for it over the next couple of days. i have never compiled a recovery, but am familiar with coding, so we shall see if i can do it.

Good luck sir and let us know your progress! if this works, may be all of us can have the echo reflashed to 2.2 and try the path you followed :)

It is far-fatched... lets see

cool. i just got my Echo, too, a couple days ago. haven't gotten a chance to play with it too much yet. not even activated yet, just been playing on wifi so far. I would like to follow the rooting path you and another on this thread have been successful with.

should i activate it first and then root/update it, or root/update it first and then activate? (maybe the latter isn't even an option, i don't know.)

thanks!

I am a new Android user, so i may not have the correct direction.

I guess most of us already have the OTA update for Gingerbread installed. so, can I say the first thing would be to get the phone unrooted? I have been scouring the internet, but it seems that Gingerbread update has blocked the methods to root the Echo.
