Echo rebooting on its own...

Mine is doing it too - I've had the phone activated less than 24 hours and today I've noticed it re-booted at least 4 times - it's just sitting here next to me doing nothing.

So is this sounding like a power management bug? I really want to get one but it needs to be fairly reliable in taking calls. Some people on here said that Juice Defender etc work very well, can any of them confirm or deny whether that program makes any difference in this issue?

...maybe if I'm lucky they had a bad shipment of Flash chips or something...

I get great battery life without using a program like Juice Defender, but I manage my wifi, screen timeout/brightness, etc... on my own. It seems to me it's just one more process running in the background to drain the battery.

It would be interesting to know just how widespread the 'reboot' issue is. I believe Sprint has acknowledged it as a known issue and is working to resolve it. But I am not having the issue and I know that there are others that are not having the issue either.

Me too

Had mine since launch day. Reboots 2-3 times a week. But lately it has happened while I'm on calls. I also can't get the screen to wake up while I'm on calls.

So this is a kernel panic relating to power management? And for you the screen does not wake up even if you tap the power button? After a few days mine seems fine yet. I am tracking battery and uptime, so far no resets.

Maybe this is a hardware problem exclusively.

Doh, I have had a couple of reboots. Never during a call though, and usually just after I have updated something or installed something. I noticed that if I tend to reboot the phone on my own (e.g. replacing battery, etc...) the phone does not reboot itself. I'm wondering if there is a memory leak somewhere that eventually causes the phone to reboot, so a regular reboot clears this up.

Just a thought.

Well everything needs to be rebooted eventually, we can thank the holy Linux kernel for that. Phone can freeze, clock can freeze, I have seen a COFFEE POT with a software problem. :)

If I'm getting at least 72 hours of uptime, that's enough to consider "mostly reliable".

I've had this phone for about two weeks now and I seem to notice it rebooting when it's trying to switch to a WiFi connection. I've already noticed that the phone prefers a 3G (or even 1x) to an available WiFi and that may be part of the problem. It might be fighting for the data provider on the phone or something else completely ridiculous. I do work in a basement and have poor coverage down there. I've really seen it do a lot of rebooting while underground and when it couldn't get a decent signal. I've also, however, seen it reboot outside in the car, but I was playing music with my car's Bluetooth connection. I've also noticed it do so when I have my BT headset paired, but that may just be me noticing it more because it's in my ear and beeps when it shuts down. I've also seen it reboot on me when I walk into my house and it starts to switch over to WiFi from 3G. All the evidence that I've noted seems to point to a problem with the WiFi/Bluetooth radio or drivers. Anybody else notice a similar pattern or an increased occurrence of these restarts under similar circumstances?

Software Upgrade!

:):):)

There is a software upgrade coming out TODAY for the Echo. The new version is 1.001SP It includes the following fixes:
Proximity sensor deactivates too slowly causing a phone reset.
No hotspot timeout setting
Copied text does not appear to be copied
Document viewer insufficient memory error
Can't adjust volume from handset during bluetooth call
Device power cycling after taking it off the charger.

Lets all hope that this upgrade takes care of most of our problems with the phone.

For those curious, the update announcement is available on Sprint's forums: Sprint Community: 6/2 - Kyocera Echo Maintenance Release...

The full list:
Kyocera Echo Maintenance Release - 1.001sp

Enhancements/Fixes
- Proximity Sensor deactivates too slowly causing a phone reset
- Hotspot timeout setting
- Copy quoted text does not appear to be copied
- Document viewer insufficient memory error
- Sims downloading issue
- Screen blacking out during a call
- Proximity sensor malfunction during call
- Unable to adjust volume from handset w/ backlight off in Bluetooth call
- Nascar videos - Final Laps video will not play
- WiFi battery drain when connected to AP
- Device power cycling after taking it off the charger
- Phantom Ringtone as SMS notification or when initiating a data session
- Power cycling

The only two issues I've been seeing is proximity sensor weirdness and reboots, so this might be a good update.

Failure acquired. My phone shipped with 1.001sp while the new version is 1.100sp; this is still froyo 2.2.1 but the firmware and baseband versions are new. I'll be watching to see if "time without signal" is fixed properly.

Okay, still getting 50% time without signal so I'll continue to keep the airplane mode toggle.

Don't know if you can get into hidden phone menu's, but on the optimus s u can #*#*4636*#*# to access phone/radio settings. From there, u would select phone settings, hit menu button, select radio, "ok" force close, select phone settings again, scroll down to " cdma(prl auto)" change to another like unknown, wait for radio to reconnect, switch back to cdma(prl auto) turn radio off and then back on. works better than airplane mode toggle, at least for me, and again I've only tried on optimus......if you can get into
phone settings hidden menu, might be worth a shot.....
(This off top of my head, exact wording is probably off.......)

And you'll always have to repeat either solutions after every reboot....unless the echo actually gets some custom ROMs that have the trick built in......

Being a part of the Product Ambassador team for... the Kyocera Echo I can say that none of the units on our team have the random rebooting problem. Nor have we heard of the issue until the OP posted.

While we hope these are few, rare instances, and easily identified and solved by simple exchanges via authorized Sprint outlets, we do want everyone to know that Sprint product development maintains a close relationship with Kyocera. Your issues are heard and being logged. Thanks for posting your issues and working with us.

Been happening to me too

I think you may be onto something. Come to think of it, every time I can remember, the reboots only happened when the phone was idle for a while after installing a new app. Could this be a feature implimented by kyocera without our knowledge!?

My echo reboot problems were resolved when I got the 2.3.4 update. Tracking / GPS apps like RunKeeper and My Tracks are now stable with the 2.3.4 update.

ok so just cause you great presidential kingdom of scientist say you havent experienced this problem doesnt mean it not your lack of common sence. The problem is the phone and or software. Not the stupid position of the power button or whatever rediculous excuse you come up with. Just find a fix mr great ambassador!!

Mine rebooted 3 times the first day I got it. The second day I downloaded GingerBread update and it hasn't done it once since then. I also had several errors the first day and none since.
