Emergency Alert System

Until it allows me to easily set my own "ringtone" for these alerts, I'll just keep them turned off. It's a really good idea though.
Well the idea is to get your attention and with the loud audible alert, it does exactly that. Allowing someone to change the alert tone would maybe defeat it's purpose. There could be a serious life threatening event one day and that alert could save your life.

True, but forcing the loud alert noise could lead to some people turning off the feature all together.

I turned them off. I use Weatherbug Elite, and saw a warning - the warning was for farther south. It did not impact where I live so I would have been very annoyed at a audible warning.
I checked the NWS and the blizzard warning overlay was for further north and east. Colorado can have rain in one section of town and snow in another. General predictions can be off. They would have to go by neighborhood elevation, and most people don't know the elevation.

If I see a weather change, I check the NWS online immediately.

I always disable those emergency alerts as I prefer more granular control via a third party app such as Beweather (also a widget on my home screen). I then only enable alerts for severe, fast developing things such as severe thunderstorms or tornadoes. But even without any type of alerts I can manage just fine on my own, no need for Big Brother's help. Been doing so most of my life even long before I ever had a smartphone (or any cell phone for that matter). :)
