Emojis in sms

When I use emojis in sms the message doesn't changed into a mms is this normal? Because on previous phones it usually changes.

It stays as sms which is the way it should work.

Thanks for the reply! So I shouldn't be charged for using them if I have unlimited texts, right?

I don't get charged for sms with enoji in as I have unlimited sms. I would be charged if it changed them to mms
