Encrypted SD Card problems

The SD card works fine when it isn't encrypted.
As soon as I encrypt it, it starts acting really weird.
Navigating through nested folders of photos in f-stop gallery seems to work for a few seconds, and then all the top level folders become empty.
Strangely, photos contained in folders that it shows as empty are still fully visible if I look through the folder view (non nested).

Solid Explorer will show the contents of a folder the first time I open it. If I go up a level and then open the folder again, it shows as empty.

The only app that seems to be fine with the encrypted card is the Samsung file manager. It works normally. I can even use it to open files in other apps, even if that app can't seem to find the file on it's own.

SanDisk 200GB purchased from Amazon (actually Amazon, not a third party seller).
I had previously used the card successfully as adopted storage in another device.

Did you reformat after you put it in your phone? How much data do you have on it?

I would try to back up the card on another device (if possible), then reinsert it back in your phone and format the card using the phone. Once you have it reformated, then encrypt it.

It is also possible the card is going bad. I've had problems in the past with SanDisk cards.

I use a 256GB Samsung Evo Plus and I'm not having any issues.

I have done all the standard troubleshooting steps (aside from a factory reset of the device).

Are you using encryption with your card?

Yes, and I haven't had any problems.

Based on what you've done, I am leaning towards the card going bad. Like I said previously, I've had reliability problems with SanDisk cards; and not just with Samsung devices. I've had problems with SanDisk microSD cards in my Surface Pro 3, Canon EOS-6D DSLR, Galaxy Tab S2, and in my GoPro cameras.

I was having problems with my SanDisk card dismounting on my SP3. I replaced it with a PNY 200GB Elite (with Bitlocker turned on) and I haven't had ANY problems with reliability.

I'm thinking it probably isn't the card in this case (unless Samsung encryption only works on their brand of cards or something).
I just tried moving a card (32GB Kingston) from another device, and had the exact same issues. Everything goes back to normal when I disable encryption.

It could be app related. I re-read your original post and noticed it is happening with certain apps.

I don't use f-stop or Solid Explorer. I use Samsung's File Explorer app and ES Explorer Pro and have not problems with either.

I presume f-stop is F-Stop Gallery? I use the stock Samsung Gallery and Google Photos for my photo organizing. I also use Lightroom Mobile as well; but mostly Samsung Gallery and Google Photos.

It's entirely possible that both F-Stop Gallery and Solid Explorer are having problems with the encryption.

You are right. The issue is with F-Stop Gallery.
When I close F-Stop other apps such as solid Explorer start working normally. Try to use F-Stop again and then switch to solid Explorer (without swiping away F-Stop on the recent apps page) and it doesn't work properly again.

An issue with F-Stop had actually been one of my initial thoughts, but it slipped my mind when several different file explorers had issues. I didn't think one malfunctioning app was supposed to be able to cause issues in other apps on Android.

Thanks for helping.

I downloaded F-Stop Gallery and initially it wouldn't read my card.

I had to go into the settings and give F-Stop permission to read my encrypted card.

Settings -> SD card write permissions

Once I gave it permissions to read/write to my micrdSD card, it found the images that were stored there.

Btw, it looks like a cool app.
