Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for devs

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

Expansys is shipping unlocked 16gb HSPA+ versions of the Galaxy Nexus in the US today. So those of you willing to part with $750 can get one. I'm sure some people are doing that so that exclusivity was never realized.

Good job, Verizon.

I was really tempted but, I'd rather pay $750.00 for 32GB of storage and the bigger battery. Also there is the ETA to consider and, while I don't mind leaving VZW and paying it; that's a little too much for me. It would seem like I'm paying more for less and, then there is the volume issue around 900Mhz devices.

my verizon is a great app.. no idea why any customer wouldnt want that on there. as far as my back up assistant.. I dont use it and dont want it.. but I'll be fine with it being on the phone.

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

Developer phone = updates from Google. Consumer phone = 1 or 2 updates from Verizon until they don't update it anymore and wait for you to buy another phone from them in 2 years.

Because its not necessary. It doesn't work on CM7 TB and to tell you the truth, I don't miss it. Backup assistant is completely useless.

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

I run a small business and, I don't agree with the practice. If I repair a customer computer or build them one, I ask before I put any kind of extra software on it.

Actually you can relate,

So lets say a client buys a new computer and wants all his/her data from his/her previous computer to the new one. It could be any OS, OSX,Windows, and Linux.

Well if you had backup assistant preloaded on the computers, it would take less then a few seconds to start the transfer.

Can you see what I am getting at?

The My Verizon App can track data usage which is important for the people who do not have unlimited. Sure ICS has it built in now but w/e, its a market app which can most likely be uninstalled.

I bet there were many meetings about what VZW apps to put on the phone and I am glad its only the two apps.

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

updates wont be coming from Google? If that's the case i will wait for a better phone!!!

Exactly

^^ True, that. You can get everything the mobile app gives (and more) by just logging into the My Verizon page on the web.

That would suck...are we confirmed on this 100%?

You can get everything and more by just logging onto any website then using apps on your phone.

Whats your point?

Not only that but you can download the app from the market as well.

Although they can both be removed via root, they are in the market and don't belong in system. Sure you can argue its just 2 apps. Yet its 2 apps that don't belong in a Nexus.

Coming pre-installed, no it can't without root access. Because it can be downloaded from the market is a reason alone it should have never been added in the first place.

Alright, we just have to wait and see how updates are handled then. Since thats the whole issue with the Apps. Just have to wait and see. No point fretting over it now.

I am not stating this as fact. It is just my fear

Point being that you don't need a mobile app pre-installed, when you have a mobile browser.

I dont know about you but its much easier to get an app which displays the info rather then me having to type in my username and password and website all the time.

If you do this that's your prerogative. Its just a time waster for me so I use the apps.

Or you could stop being lazy, stop giving 3rd party access to your phone call history, location data, etc, etc, and save a link to the browser with that url already entered. You can also store u/n and p/w on your phone (just like my vzw) so you don't have to type them in every time. At the end of the day as a user it is up to you to be as secure as you wish to be on your phone.
